Description
"The Atlas Moth has the largest wing surface area of all moths. It is so named because its wing patterns resemble maps. The Atlas Moth's wings have triangular transparent "windows" whose purpose we don't know. The wing tips are hooked and some say resemble a snake's head complete with eye, to scare off predators."[link]

Shame that they only live for about a week. Crazy nature...

Another bizarre creature. Great shot.
I'm guessing as to the purpose of the 'transparent windows' but perhaps they're meant more as 'light reflectors' (as a mirror might). Something to confuse and frighten would-be predators. Perhaps meant to represent a flash of eyes or something similar.

That's a good point! Although it doesn't really reflect any light. It's more like a clear window sealed by thin scotch tape.

Wow again, another fantastic capture. I love these and you sure are right, those wings do look like the heads of a snake.

The "snake heads" is just a theory. So, it could be some scary looking parrots flying around.
