Description
These styles are not mine!!Trying to find something to freshen up my artwork and re-evaluate my style. I decided to do an experiment and draw one of my characters (Rivec) in a bunch of different styles that I draw from and look up to. THE ARTISTS WOULD BE SO ASHAMED. I totally butchered their style. But I learned a lot, so hopefully they shall forgive me. They are...
Road to El Dorado, Atlantis, Miyazaki, Yi Lee, and Tetsuya Nomura (before crisis style).
I wanted to do more, because I could go on and on forever and this is fun, but I wanted to move on to other things. It was a nice warm up though that I might continue. :>
I will move this to scraps later!
Thanks again to all who gave me advice and encouragement in my journal. I shall get through this art rut!!! 8< *determined*

Hey the Miyazaki one is pretty good actually
and so is the Atlantis one but I'm not sure about the rest because I haven't seen or heard of them. *lives in box* ;x;

The Road to El Dorado style was the one I picked up on without even looking at your description. You have that one down pat and I feel it looks the strongest. But hey...maybe I just prefer the Dreamwork style.

I still think they have much more of your own style in them than you think, though I can definately see the influences well. I think it's healthy to keep your style organic and to keep considering new techniques and stuff. Awesome sketchworks!

Wooow, how interesting! I think you did a great job adapting different styles, I bet it wasn't easy ^^
Personally I really like how he looks Miyazaki style, but that may be influenced by my inner fangirl screaming Haku!! and Howl!! over and over in my head.

I think it's neat to draw characters in other styles. And it's also neat to see people draw their characters in other styles (...like Road to El Dorado, le swoon!). And these all look very much like the styles, no butchering involved. I hope you work through ze problems, I will cheer for you in...the most stranger-on-deviantART kind of way. ^^

But your style is already so cute! ^^
I know how you feel though, just be careful not to focus so much on thier style you forget your own, that sucks. (been there, done that)
I definately got El Dorado (Love that movie), Atlantis... neehh... kind, it could be more angular and squarish (I love that little latina mechanic they had, she was so cute), Miyazaki (best animator ever!) I can see it, with him it's hard to pick him out from a still, his stuff is all about the movment for me (so fluid, mmm), but I can see his ears shifting and his hair ruffling in the wind.

zomg Atlantis <333 love et. i cant beleive i didnt realized what your style reminded me of... it was that! and and also it looks like Treasure Planet...
so since those are big (disney? all of them?) movies, is there one major artist or several people?
wow, are they on dA it would be neat to see what else they've got in that style
on your character, i like the last one the most it would look neat with a broken nose maybe? the other one on the bottom isnt bad either
and the one in the middle is cool. i just dont like the hair all square. XD sorry.
just if you wanted an opinion.
is that a pencil sketch? :3

What tickles me is that in Disney's Atlantis, the animators imitated Mike Mignola's ( [link] ) style... even the "big guys" do it! Heehee.

Yup! You can definitely see it in the shape of the fingers on the characters, the machinery, and those weird monolith giants at the end. Gwar, I love Mignola.

OMG chicadee... *starts to drool*... too much Rivec makes me go dizzy in the head... XD!!!
anyways... you're trying to freshen up your artstyle? hmm... *thinks*... well... the El Dorado one still looks very similiar to your old style (which is )... wasn't it always one of your fav animations? o__O... if you're trying to do something a little different with your art, might i suggest integrating the Miyazaki or the Tetsuya Nomura (megamegadrool) style into your own? i think they'd both look really sweet with your style and are a bit, how you say, "refreshing"... hehe... anyways... keep at it... i know whatever you decide to do will be awesome and i can't wait to see this new style... ^__^
ps Rivec in the Tetsuya Nomura style is MEGA ~ XD!!!

The Yi Lee one scares the hell outta me cause it looks nothing like Rivec (to me) @_@ So bishy :0

CapnFlynn [2007-08-10 13:09:48 +0000 UTC]
Haha, Miyazaki-style forever!
I can still tell you drew them though.
May I give a suggestion? 'Cause I've always really admired and envied how well you draw, so it seems kind of forward of me. But. One of the Nine Old Men gave someone this advice, and it struck me as good. Don't worry about style. Just draw, and draw, and draw, and style will take care of itself, flowing naturally from who you are and the way you see the world. Maybe take up life drawing again? That way you can look at the way things really are in real life, and that may help you decide how you choose to interpret them in your art?
Er, long comment! Sorry!

If so, good job emulating her style, even in a sketch . It's noticeable.
