Description
A thousand years ago, the world changed; Luna was banished, Celestia ascended to demi-godhood, and the Elements disappeared into history. Unwilling to discuss a painful moment in her life, Celestia let the event fade into myth, vaguely recollected by story-tellers, stained-glassmakers and unpaid DeviantArtists.This represents almost two months of work. I can't imagine taking on anything quite this ambitious again, or at least I'll handle it differently.
Thanks to for proofing it for me and for Celestia's Cutie Mark.
MLP is, of course Β©Hasbro, though Lauren and her cohorts were soley responsible for it.

Nov. 23 '13 - aaaaaaaand the show has finally established the battle with Nightmare Moon and Q, I mean Discord, and that Tia's mane was always this way. Ah well. Still no clue why the elements turned to stone or why Tia lost / abandoned them in her own castle.

Celestia was not Luna's friend at the end. She was at one point, how else could the Elements work on Discord and what not? She admitted as much the morning Luna returned, "will you accept my friendship?" I'm guessing Luna tried to be Celestia friend but was pushed away one too many times and she gave up.

And again, Celestia is demonized. Celestia asked LunaΒ to accept friendship. Clearly the problem was not a one-sided one. Perhaps Celestia did act rather distant, but I doubt Luna actually triedΒ to do much about it.

Celestia asked Luna to accept her friendship, that's not to say Luna had no other friends before. Probably not, but you would expect your big sister to be something of a friend, and she was not.
Don't get me wrong, I love Celestia, when she's done right with faults. In the show she is not done right with faults. Maybe she doesn't want to be Princess? Maybe she hates any non-pony and is prejudice? Maybe she's an addict or cuts herself? What I can not stand is this 'larger than life, white knight, holier than thou, flawless' image some Celestia fans have.

Okay, now I see where you're coming from, and I agree completely. She needs to have flaws, and so I go with a fairly standard "broken god" set:
She reallyΒ doesn't like being a Princess. She wants very badly to be considered normal. The primary reason ponies don't worship her like a god is because at one point she flat-out ordered them not to.
She doubts her own judgement, simply because no one will tell her when she's wrong.
She's lonely. Everypony save one is beneath her (and very possibly set themselves there), and even if she could talk to someone like an ordinary pony, they age and die a hundred times over while she remains.
She's plagued with regret from how lonely she let Luna get and/or her gross mishandling of the entire situation--and quite possibly from hundreds of mistakes and thousands of casualties of war before that.
There is some godlike hubris still in her, from before Luna's banishment, but it's been thoroughly shattered by the aforementioned regret. She still has a sense of "I deserve whatever I want"Β that shows up from time to time, and she hatesΒ it.
She is so, so old.
And, because her subjects adore her and depend on her, she has to hide all this behind a queenly mask. The image is 'larger than life, white knight, holier than thou, flawless'. The realityΒ is a very old, very broken mare who has more regret and more responsibility than anyone should have.

I've had a couple of people say they like my version better. I thought the canon version was just too short; she turns into nightmare moon and celestia just kicks her to the moon and that's it.
