I still can't get over how comically large the head is in portion to the body, but after doing some research, the huge size actually makes pretty good sense, specially since there are birds to day that have a similar structure, but not nearly as emphasized.

Also nice touch on the fur! Must be taken ages to get it quite right. Don't see why people think the for is impossible, some quick research says otherwise. Plus just look at 90% of literally anything living during that period, even the most iconic creatures look anatomically unbelievable XD

Hatzegotperxy is the taller one, right? It was indeed larger than Quezalcoatlus.

Hatzego was bigger than Quetzal.

No, taller Quetz is taller and Hatze is smaller or should I say... smoler

I don't know where you got the idea of fluffy patagia. They would have preserved in Sordes, Anurognathus and Pterodactylus, and they do nothing but slow a pterosaur down. Which is the absolute worst thing if you are this big. Not to mention the original didn't have that.

Because something did not preserve in one group doesn't mean it can't evolve later on, my man. That side of the Pterosaur family tree is millions of years apart from Azhdarchida, from which we have no integument or something worthwhile whatsoever.

They may not have had patagia filaments, In which I've never heard of that before, but did not have naked, bat-like wings.

How? Pycofibers wouldn't affect its flight style. At least until they start to alter the shape of the wing and mass drastically.

How? Drag.

Keep in mind of the how big this animal is

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheDubstepAddict In reply to Midiaou [2017-06-20 22:01:10 +0000 UTC]

That's why I did the point in the first place. The bigger you are the less viscous a medium feels. That's why small insects have hair on their wings and swim rather than fly through the air. At that size, drag can help stay in the air. And big birds and pterosaurs have nearly no tail or tail feathers, because in this size category drag is bad, slowing you down and thereby reducing lift.

But they wouldn't produce much drag at all.

Corallianassa In reply to TheDubstepAddict [2017-06-18 08:31:16 +0000 UTC]

Well you made the claim in the first place

But ey, colugo's and sugar gliders have very thick fur coverings on their wings and they don't produce much drag at all. In fact, drag is an even greater problem for gliders than it is for flyers, and gliders even have furry wings.

And why don't bats have them then? Or birds? Or big insects (>10cm wingspan)?

Corallianassa In reply to TheDubstepAddict [2017-06-21 16:39:18 +0000 UTC]

1. I don't know much about bats
2. Birds have feathers
3. insects never have fluffy wings.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheDubstepAddict In reply to Corallianassa [2017-06-22 11:12:00 +0000 UTC]

2. Yes. But smooth feathers.

3. Yes, some verry, verry small ones (<2mm) do. Because they swim rather than fly through the air.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Corallianassa In reply to TheDubstepAddict [2017-06-22 12:31:36 +0000 UTC]

1. Because the feathers are directly used to fly. You can't make an aerofoil out of hair.
2. Yes, and that's a very specialized way of moving. Insects are not comparable.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheDubstepAddict In reply to Corallianassa [2017-06-22 15:29:51 +0000 UTC]

1. But if floofy wings would be advantageous, they would've some fluffy barbules

2. Which further proves my point of it making no sense for giant fliers to have cuddleflappers

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Corallianassa In reply to TheDubstepAddict [2017-06-22 17:03:45 +0000 UTC]

But the feathers already have frayed edges though.
Also, I'm not saying fluff on the wings gives any direct advantages, just that it wouldn't give any great disadvantages either. And as we all know, animals have such traits all the time.

2. But insects are literally uncomparable. Bats and gliding mammals are, and they sometimes have hair on the membranes.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheDubstepAddict In reply to Corallianassa [2017-06-23 06:24:37 +0000 UTC]

1. i doubt that anything adding more drag to a flier this size would get passed on

2. but they are much, much too smol

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Corallianassa In reply to TheDubstepAddict [2017-06-23 07:55:09 +0000 UTC]

1. But no-one is suggesting they had very long filaments. Small filaments barely add any drag.

2. Colugo's are as big as the largest bats, and as we know, bats, colugos and sugar gliders are the only living animals with membranes used for flying comparable to pterosaurs.

9Weegee In reply to Corallianassa [2017-09-25 10:28:34 +0000 UTC]

I would not compare a pterosaur's wings to a colugo's. They are entirely diffirent structures.

Corallianassa In reply to 9Weegee [2017-09-25 10:34:46 +0000 UTC]

Yes. I am trying to make approximations, there simply are no modern structures equal to it. Exactly zero.
