Description So... yeh. You've all probably heard the.... daspletosaurus news. (These news > www.livescience.com/58474-new-… )
In my opinion, there paper does not really explain why tyrannosaurids "didn't have lips". It mostly focuses on the question of: "Did tyrannosaurids have sensitive scales on their snouts, or just beaks? And why? (based on the new discovery)"
I believe that both scales and bare skin are possible (on the snout) , but i just made this because.. you can never have enough lipped rexes! (also because i wanted to make a tyrannosaurid with scaly lips since every single rex reconstruction i've made has smooth, bare lips... and also to add some armor xD) ewwww scaly lips and armor
Since we don't have enough evidence to prove that they didn't have lips, i'm free to speculate, and so are you!
Remember, this is my opinion, but there's a 50% chance that i'm wrong. So, please, don't complain about the lips or whatever. I know that both theories could be correct, but i will always reconstruct tyrannosaurids with lips unless we find solid evidence that they didn't have them.

The paper said that they were lipless, but I personally Don't buy it.
Only time will tell....

This is very splendid - both imposing AND plausible.

Mmmm
Not that plausible (to me, at least)

I'll make a more accurate version of this, soon

You have made one of the best rexs I have seen, very good job you make the paper's claims look believable, and I love how you added lips
(I also love how you brought the keratin on the top of the snout down the front of the snout.)

Not a complaint, but I would like to point out that the paper misidentified the cracked keratin coated skin on crocodile skulls for scales (which is a rather large mistake in some regards)  Wood storks also have a similar phenomenon to crocs.

good to see you're skeptical of the new paper

Thanks for the positive remarks!

Also, you've got a point there.
I noticed that those cracks were not really scales, right after i uploaded this (plus right after asking some people at the saurian discord) and i'm currently working on a new version of this, which is going to have smoother lips.
Thanks for telling me anyway!

I'll send you a link to the updated version when i finish it

I'm gonna apologize to for using is argument so much instead of making my own but this needs to be understood  Thoughts on the new das

Daspletosaurus horneri:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8Yj0tBZ6RyTTVByeFg1eTVKQTQ/view
While I certainly agree with the naming of the new species, I have doubts about the integument soft tissue claims.
First of all, the paper makes the mistake of mistaking the integument on a crocodile's skull with scales. The skull of a crocodile is covered in a cracked keratin sheath, not scales. A similar phenomenon also occurs in some bird species (ie. woodstork) where the skin has keratin growth.
It's entirely possible that the snout could have been covered in cornified (thick and coarse) skin, as was previously hypothesized.
Similar to hippo and rhino hide.
I think both cornified skin and ketatin coated skin are possibilities. (leaning towards the former more though)
Regardless, neither coating would necessarily stop lips from happening.
I would like to draw some attention to the s

Again, why would they choose to mention it in the title "it didn't had lips" if they haven't found any proof for not having them? yet they did, so they must have had a reason to do so.

That article doesn't stand on the strongest of feet. Also we have had several occasions where an article makes headlines but ends up being false due to jumped conclusions. A certain little Chinese Ankylosaur is a good example. Right now I'm kind of on the fence but more leaning towards keeping the lips. But I'll be open minded if my standpoint ultimately turns out to be false.

Oh ok - didn´t knew that
I personally like lips on dinosaurs too - but interesting
we can´t get back into future - so we´ll probably never know for sure - but I really
love to hear/see/read news about our past!

Very well done artwork!
