Description A shot of Vista's media center playing the same video as the one showed here [link] Though I don't have aero, but vista runs pretty smoothly on my workstation. Infact, I take most bad things I said about vista back. Just the system I tested (TinyVista) was really buggy and slow, even though alot of services were disabled. The full vista ultimate is really good. I installed a clean copy of it, and it works really great, even without the updates. There are much things I like about it, for instance - the media center, it did not have any codec\video card problems on first run (unlike xp mce 2005, had to greenbutton forums and ask for help). All videos worked fine. Also vista has much better sound quality, the sounds very clear, much better then on xp with same quality headphones. There are some small things, I found in the startmenu, about which some of you, xp users are not quite avare - Tablet PC extras, one of them is the new Input panel, which is comfortable to use, and it even recognizes my mouse-typewriting just fine, I imagine how good it works with a tablet\tablet pc. The other extras like windows journal or stickynotes(ported to xp) are useless, for a non-tablet pc user. The snippingtool - is a kind of a program to capture screen areas, I find it pretty useless for a snipping program because it's faster to do a screenshot with paint... And one more very imp thing - Vista Voice recogntion - It is really awesome, the training is userfirendly and doesn't last very long, it's so simple to control vista just with your voice! Though it makes minor mystakes, but that's my crappy mic for 1$ and not-quite-english pronouncement lol If you get vista, don't forget to test that!
Some things disappoint me in the startmenu accessories area, now instead of the cool Mobility Center featured in Beta 2 there is a Sync Center which looks pretty useles now. Other programs are just updated from xp - the sound recorder, system tools etc. Also one thing surprised me about vista, that it has some new technology to autodetect almost anything you connect, for instance a mouse - new USB mouse - I unplugged it and plugged the new one - and it was instantly ready ti use, vista poped up a notification that appropriate drivers are installed. On XP, I had to burn a xp sp2 iso to get my drivers for a mouse...Also it detected my new multi functional printer without even inserting a CD. That really impresses me. The driver possibilities are not the only enhanced thing, Vista has wide netowrk possibilities, in the control panel there are more settings for that. Vista is really easyer to use, because almost anywhere you get help, every shortcut has a tooltip explaining what this is etc. The new help center is better, it has demos even for total computer amateurs for eg. (how to use a mouse something) That's a nice feature but useless for me. Other thing, why vista is so big, it's that the interface (even basic) is nice and smooth in almost all areas. Supplied wth 256 pix icons as default it really looks nice in explorer. The explorer is also enhanced alot, preview pane, expanded details, search, stacks etc. I really like that, because all information is right there, I don't have to rightclick it and go to properties, I don't have to wait for a tooltip to show like in xp, it's really easyer. Overall vista has alot of new features, but it's not a major improvement from xp still. Has it's issues (not a big deal for now) Though it's really worth a try. If it works fast on my 6 year old PC, it will work on yours better!
The vista experience is only few weeks, my opinion might change, but I don't think so, infact it could really change after SP1 is released.

Note to all vista haters: Vista works fine on PCs with appropriate or at least capable hardware. If not I'm sure there are drivers realeased. As for compability, for now I don't have problems, everything "just works".

In short words - Vista's not that bad

*Just another happy vista user*

Note2: I still use xp

Oh and I am using 64 Kbps WMA. I don't notice ANY "quality loss" like people say. They think they need 256 or more.

fediaFedia In reply to aesmon11 [2007-12-31 18:32:51 +0000 UTC]

64 Kbps is noise not audio, I only listen to tracks no less then 256 KB\s and still see a difference between WAV (losless)

aesmon11 In reply to fediaFedia [2007-12-31 18:57:29 +0000 UTC]

I dont notice any quality loss at all. Plus it is only 2MB per song. The only other thing that is better is 48Kbps Atrac3plus which is similar to 128 MP3

Oh and for aero you can pick up a simple card like mine (7300 GT), I got it for about $60 so it should be really cheap for you!

I thought you would want a desktop with dual 8800 Ultra's and QX9650 and 4GB RAM and dual 30" LCDs. That should be affordable for you!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

fediaFedia In reply to aesmon11 [2007-12-31 18:31:27 +0000 UTC]

nah, I settle for only a 8600 GTX, AMD quad, 2 GB RAM and 17' little notebook... Because when I'll be moving, a notebook is easyer to move then a whole pc I think... and 30' LCD - there is no such thing, the only one I got on the market was a 24' one, and I use it as a TV in my bedroom, it's tooo BIG lol

I think it's cheaper to buy a 30' Samsung TV, which has a DVI and HDMI plugs, and can work as a monitor.

I've had the same experiences with the printer and the mouse, too. on xp I had to install them first from a CD to get them to work. Vista recognized them both just like that. before I got Vista I heard people say stuff like: "oh Vista's crap because it doesn't recognize any hardware" or "it's not even compatible with older software" etc. etc. In my case non of that is true so I've had a pretty good experience with Vista so far.
on this note, have fun with Vista and a happy and successful 2008

Yeah Vista is cool.
I use it for a few weeks now and it works like a charm.
With the SP1 RC it dont need that much resources any more.
I used many programs to make XP look like Vista.
With all programs, XP used the same resources like Vista.
And now i dont need to install all that stuff any more.

I have XP still installed on a different partition but i use Vista all the Time.
You get a Texas Hold`em as a update for Ultimate and Dreamscene rockz.
This little features are very cool.

I guess Vista is just the prettier brother of XP.
But a pretty looking is sometimes all we need or want.
So dont hate Vista because it dont hates you.

After a while you start to realise the flaws in vista. Everyone does. While better in so many ways, theres also so much wrong with it. As I said above, lack of Directplay/ipx really sucks ass totally. More HD activity leads to more heat/noise. Alot of other kind of bugs here and there. Vista vs XP. Windows 7 ftw!

fediaFedia In reply to KiTTy-RaWr [2007-12-31 09:18:13 +0000 UTC]

I don't play much games (expecially online) so that is not imp to me. But I do agree that HD activity makes some noises when computer is playing some high quality videos...

i just dislike it because of some bugs, software & game issues... but it is a good OS overall - bit of a mem hog too

KiTTy-RaWr In reply to WyzoMan [2007-12-31 02:05:28 +0000 UTC]

I have to agree. Lack of Directplay/ipx really sucks totally, as well as the wireless problem I had. As for the memhog - Vista chaches so much data in the ram for much faster use - Superfetch...
