Description
Ladybug, in a heavy armored configuration. This is the second image I worked on while I was streaming on August 13th 2011. I spend the majority of second hour of stream working on this image, which you can see the unedited video here: [link]
I started working on this doodle because I have solicited suggestions from the people in the chat about subjects that I should draw. I was given the task of drawing a "battle damaged ladybug in heavy armor".
I thought some* of the design motif of Space Marines is appropriate, although I suppose that's creative laziness on my part, since I really didn't come up with my own unique design, but incorporating an aesthetics.
This is considered a "doodle" because it is drawn in 1/16th the size of normal working resolution. Its impossible to add certain amounts of details and it does not scale up very well. Nevertheless though, I did not ending up shading this image due to the complexity of the mechanical subjects' designs. It wouldn't have been worth the time anyway, if I were to invest that kind of time I might as well scale it up to full size.
... which I might still do in the future.

It's a tough call. Mental toughness is more interesting than obvious physical toughness although it's harder to convey. That's why one of the ideas I had all those years ago was to have the helmet or mask worn by the character built with eyes that were closed by default. The eyes would look a little bit like those on a metal Buddha statue, which would convey a relaxed state of mind and a sense of separation from the immediate environment and situation; hopefully this would indicate that the character was so confident of his ability to control the situation that he didn't have to look like it was any effort for him. It's like how when a person looks away from an authority figure who wants their attention; it irritates the authority figure and conveys a degree of disinterest. Of course the character would still be aware of what was going on but it would make a change from the usual "menacing glowing eyes" concept that's commonly used in renditions of powerful characters. It all boils down to an attempt to convey the mental state to the observer without the need for exposition.
As for the other thing, displaying injury or battle damage, while that would be an effective typical way of conveying a degree of tenacity from the character (in other words he fights on despite being wounded) it would also compromise the idea that the character was so formidable as to be invulnerable. On the other hand, it might quickly get boring if the character was totally invulnerable . Ah, what strange things occupy our thoughts >_<.

This is pretty cool! Yeah, Space Marine stuff is pretty dated by now. Some day i'd like to figure out a design for a "tough" character that didn't rely on hard armour, but that still looked cool or semi-realisticic. You should draw more versions/angles of that character you drew for me years ago. That looks super cool

Hmm, the thing about space marines, is that they are "design" to be "tough". Although the toughness you are going for might be some other kind of quality other then battle field endurance. Toughness can be referring to something other then just that, could mean that a person is harden emotionally, or cool under fire, for example. One way to show that someone is tough might be showing the kind of wound that one survives, battle damage, scars.
On that front, I would, but I don't quite remember his specification.
