A nice relaxing evening was all Twilight needed. The hectic life she lead was something that she didn’t mind having, but every once in awhile she liked to wind down a bit and just read some books.

So when the opportunity arose for her to take the night off, she couldn’t help but trot happily into the kitchen. Leaving her castle was hard in the beginning, but now that she was all settled in at Sweet Apple Acres with her husband, it was incredibly easy to just come through and settle into the old, patched couch.

Big Mac was still out in the fields when she started her book, but with the sun setting, it wasn’t long before he came inside. She perked up at his entry. “Hi Mac!”

“Hello, love,” he murmured, smiling softly as he went to go wash his hooves. “How was your day?”

“Busy. Incredibly busy. Yours?”

“Busy as well.”

“Naturally,” she laughed, slipping out of her comfy seat to trot over to him. Careful of her horn, she nuzzled against his neck, shutting her eyes contently. Big Mac’s deep chuckle made her a bit tingly; it always did.

But their little quiet time didn’t last long. Only seconds later, the front door burst open, and… Spike. Spike was there, holding a letter in his hand. “Twilight!”

“What is it, Spike she asked, pulling away quickly. Concern riddled her mind; Spike didn’t often come around, other than to deliver important letters. And, well, judging by the scroll, it was something important.

“Did you read it?” She asked quickly, her golden magic encircling the scroll. Spike hesitated, then nodded sadly.

“Pearl is dead.”

Pearl? Pearl… she wracked her brain for a few seconds before-

“Oh by Starswirl’s beard… how?!”

Spike sat on the couch, staring at the ground. “I don’t know. Assassination, definitely, but… no one knows who. Luna is urgently summoning you.”

Big Mac looked worried, but he gestured to the door. “Quickly, Twilight. It’s urgent.”

With that, she was off. Wings extended, she soared through the sky towards Canterlot. Her magic, no matter how strong it was, was a bit slow and often unreliable for long distance travelling. So flying was fast enough, and when Canterlot was close, she activated a teleporting spell that got her just before the guards.

Luna was in the throne room, pacing quickly as she waited for Twilight to arrive. Thankfully, that wasn’t a long time as the doors were opened for the young princess to gallop in.

“I came as soon as I got the letter,” Twilight said, breathing heavily. “I heard that-”

“She’s gone, Twilight… my little girl…” Luna murmured miserably. Her pacing slowed to a stop in front of the smaller pony, tears rolling down her cheeks. “They did everything.”

“Oh… I’m so sorry, Luna…” Twilight furrowed her brow, shuffling her hooves. Nice polished floor, hm. Should she really be asking more questions?

“I need you to find out who did this.”

Her head snapped up. “Me?!”

“Yes, you,” Luna nodded, stepping closer. “You’re good at that aren’t you? Solving things?”

“M-me…? No, no… my son, yes, but not me.”

She looked a bit perplexed, almost as if she forgot that Twilight had a son. Faint recognition crossed her face after only a few seconds of surprise. “Your son. Is he good?”

“His magic is mainly based on that sort of stuff,” Twilight informed her, nodding. “He doesn’t have a job at the moment, but occasionally helps out when needed. I could always assign him the case.”

“Please… please get him to do this for me,” Luna murmured numbly. It seemed like it still hadn’t set in that her daughter was gone yet. “Please find out who did this.”
