One of the reasons that I haven’t posted so much art lately is that I’ve been very busy learning 3D art in Blender. I’ve made a note of when I first started: 21th of March 2022. Now, more than I year later; I can show you the result: the final render of the first version of ‘the statistical average Siderian – aka mu (µ)’. So this isn’t really a person but just ‘the average male Siderian’. Yet seeing such a realistic Siderian already feels like a dream coming trough!

It took me some time to learn sculpting, retopology, texturing, rigging, animating, light, simple backgrounds and fur combing and I still feel like quite a beginner on many fronts. That’s why I have planned to do two more versions of Mu before I will finally start to model *actual* Siderian persons (I’m looking forward to that!).

Regarding this model; I’ve made the sculpture in Sculptris and only after animating the model, I realized that I should have sculpted some things differently to work well in different poses. The retopologized mesh is also rather simple and I realized that the normal map didn’t work in combination with fur (which makes sense...but hey, I was/am a noob); so all the details of the sculpture got lost. Regarding the fur…damn that was complicated. I think that took me months and it was the hardest step of it all. I’ve used the old particle system in Blender (there is a new hair system but it’s not yet optimal for fur) in which it's quite difficult to control glitchy hair. In version 2, I will make a much better base mesh, I will rig the mouth, face and claws, I will try to get better muscle/soft body simulations and I’ll play around with hair dynamics. In version 3, I will build the skeleton and muscles and I'll try out Blender's new hair system.

I will post an short walking cycle animation (in shit quality since rendering takes ages…) next week. You can find some animations on my tumblr ( reignofsiderians.tumblr.com/ )already, but those are without the long fur.
