I was trying to get into a habit of making a dream journal by drawing them out to help with the memory. Reading back on dreams that are over 5+ years old is surprisingly difficult to recall, unless they were vividly detailed to begin with. Hence, drawing with the writing should help preserve these memories.

Maybe I should get a moleskin for this sort of thing.

---------Below is the dream description in case anyone wants to read it. -----------------

It was a dream based on gears 2 style/game play.

At first, it starts out in a white'ish beige coloured misty atmosphere. There was a huge colliseum, in grecan-roman style judging by the rigged edges of their pillar columns. It was deserted and there were 2 guys and a female with me, looking around.

In the middle of the colliseum was a mausoleum littered with ruins that fell from the ceiling above. It was surrounded by a murky moat with water-lillies floating around. Nature has already taken its course as new life was apparent all around with grassy knolls. Curious koi fishes from the moat greeted us as we got near, then swam away whenever we looked at them. We skipped on rocks or broken pillars that acted as stepping stones to get to the center of the arena.

Once we got to the center, a monkey in a NASA suit jumps in front of us from his high hiding spot. I typed /gasp in a chat window. I was surprised to run into a talking monkey. I greeted him with a "hello" to which he replies back with a "heryo" with a wave. We were supposed to escort him away as part of a mission. We had to make him follow us but he wasn't responding. He kept saying "heryo" every time we beckoned him to follow. I remember feeling that was rather odd, that he couldn't make it out of there by himself (he was behaving like a typical NPC in a game).

Our new mission was to bait a heavy dinosaur like a diplodicus to follow you to a room where a T-rex was sleeping. Then somehow provoke the T-rex into fighting the diplodicus while you go into a crevice that leads to an exit. The escort had to survive as part of this mission.

After some time we finally got him to follow us, we found an entrance blocked with a webbed layer. When I got close to it, I could see a silhouette of something behind it. I thought I saw it moved but I wasn't sure. So I heaved a rock into the entrance which took down the webbing. Behind the web was a baby dinosaur that was blueish grey with black spots with a light underbelly. It had a bird shape head with a long snout, a herbivore with slightly jagged teeth. It has a bony crown plate along the top of its head. It had large orange eyes and shrieked to its mother for help. At that point I started to run away when I saw shadows from behind it animating within the walls of the entrance. I told the guys with me to start running too so we went back to the place in the beginning of the dream.

The zombie part to the dream was just about getting the hell out of there, from point A to B. In this case, somewhere in the congo neighbouring Rwanda.

There were raving zombies every which way you go. Even their local wild-life were zombified with their physical abilities enhanced. Fortunately, zombies with AK 47s were terrible at aiming.

Based off of Resident Evil 5 demo. Or perhaps from playing Left 4 Dead.

Haha thats awesome dude. I wish I had the ability to draw without a reference so I could do stuff like this.

Thanks dude! I couldve used refs for this to make life a bit easier though lol. Took the easy way out. Tsk tsk..

As for drawing without reference... Copy everything! Build up a storehouse of things copied through experience. Maybe things that youre interested in so that its more fun for you and eventually youll draw from memory based on those experiences.Β

I like to warm up first by copying things.

Thanks for the advice. I try to do at least a little drawing everyday. Mostly all from reference. Did you start keeping a dream journal to practice lucid dreaming? I've been keeping a pretty steady dream journal for about a year now. Most of it I have no idea how to draw but I hope to be able to eventually.

I do keep a journal but havent been writing dreams lately. Sometimes looking back on my dream drawings i find that the drawing itself takes over how it actually was in my dream and that makes it harder to jog the memory of it, but its ok if the intention was to mine the dream for ideas or as fodder for your art and not for the true memory of it.Β

To help you with your challenge of drawing down your dreams, I find it easier to draw the dream symbols first instead of the scenes, like if its Β a dog, just draw the dog as best as you can from the angle you saw it in and add a little detail of the scene around it too if you like. Then draw the next symbol and so on - all on the same page to make a collage out of it too if you want. Go with whatever works for you. Dive in. Make mistakes. Experiment. Trust yourself and just allow it without trying to be perfect. You can always edit the drawing later with studies and references (write while drunk, edit while sober as Hunter Thompson would say). Over time youll naturally find a way of doing it the way you like to do it.

I rarely have success with lucid dreaming. Did it a few times in the past. The closest thing Im doing to that nowadays is revising the dream that i just had. If it was an unpleasant dream then I wake up to playback on it and change the unpleasant parts to the way i want it to be instead. Once finished I go back to sleep to see the (revised) dream all over again. Its pretty strange and cool. : )

Hows your luck with lucid dreaming?

That is good advice. I need to just accept that my drawings from memory are gonna suck for a while and just power through it. I wonder if theres any groups on here that do this kind of stuff. I've seen a couple other people that have drawings from dreams that talk about keeping a journal.

I've only had really one long lucid dream about a month and a half ago. Before that every time I would become lucid the dream would start to fade away and I'd wake up after a few seconds to a minute. I made a point this last time to remember to rub my hands together rigorously as soon as I was lucid. It stabilizes the dream and gives me time to plan my next move. I have to say my first real long lucid dream was not how I expected it. It was awesome dont get me wrong but I didnt have the control over things I wanted. I did some flying/floating, had sex... you know, all the obvious stuff. Then I tried talking to a dream character but they were unresponsive. Then I kind of got in their face and was like "Listen here me! You're me so you gotta answer me when I talk to you!" And it changed its face to this kind of indescribable nothingness which shocked me out of the dream. My subconsciousness just enjoys fucking with me I think. I dont really have many unpleasant dreams anymore though. I just like letting my subconscious run the show and enjoy the ride. I really want to have a direct conversation with my subconscious so I can have deeper understanding of myself.

Im sure there are groups out there. Its deviantart so its bound to have everything. Why not start a group of your own later?

Sounds awesome with your lucid dreaming experiences. Keep it up! You can try doing lucid dreaming while meditating too. I did that once but as soon as i knew i was in control of my actions it snapped me outta there. More of a surprise really as i wasnt expecting it nor knew it can happen while meditating. Havent been able to repeat the experience ever since. : /Β

Having a direct convo with the subconscious would be cool. Lemme know if you find a way how. I'll do the same too.

Yea it seems like there arnt any real major groups that do dream art. And I've actually gone into lucid dreams twice while still awake. Its called a wake induced lucid dream. Its really hard to do and takes a lot of patience. I found a few youtube videos a while back that explain it. Basically what you have to do is not move for a long ass time until you feel like your going to die and then you just give into that feeling. Theres a bunch of other tricks to it but thats basically the gist of it.

You should watch this guys videos if you want to try itΒ youtube.com/watch?v=IKquVghfwG0 He gives a ton of free in depth information on the subject. You dont even really need to go to his web site and buy the DVDs and crap hes trying to sell. I did the timer method he talks about and right when I thought it wasnt working and was about to give up and move I had a false awakening and was already in a dream that I later became lucid in. Another time I had an out of body experience and floated around in a dream version of my bed room. I dont really buy into the new age astral projection explanations of it but I still think its a worthwhile experience.

Thanks for the link. I saw a little bit of it but i will need to watch it on my computer for better sound.

So that meditation dream i had was a wake induced dream then? If so, thats cool. I will keep doing that then. Just takes an ass load of patience and time. I believe it happened after two hours or so, long after my ego left out of pure boredom.Β

Thanks for the hint about feeling like youre about to die and then giving into that feeling. I recognise that part all too well but never really gave in for w/e reason(s). Now i know better and hopefully that'll do the trick.Β

Most dreams aren't as cool as this one so give it some time! I mean, who would draw themselves mowing the grass as a dream, eh? And yes, that was yesterday's dream.

i dunno... fixing up roughs could result in the art losing its edge or uniqueness... if that makes sense

I just got playing through the short Left 4 Dead 2 demo, but I doubt my dreams tonight will be as crazily awesome as yours.

A dream journal huh? Now there's a thought.

I watched my bro and our friend Eric play that L4D2 demo as well. Didn't get any dreams out of that. It depends I guess, on how stimulated you were that day compared to the rest of the day/week.

Man, those were the days! Back when FPS games were pretty decent on a console, all thanks to the N64's controllers.
