Why? Why? Why, did they have to summon him at this hour? “It’s not like you ever sleep”, they’d said.
“But I have work to do”, he’d said. They dragged him down the hall nonetheless.

Ever since finding his peer group after centuries of solitude 049’s research had finally begun to get the respect it deserved. But it needed more than respect – it needed time. Lately they had given him a lot
more time, or so it seemed. But what was this, another interview? What else could they possibly want to know? And why be so urgent?

The Doctor was freed of his bonds and shoved into a dark room, almost colliding with a large lavender plant. The smell gave it away. Why all the lavender? Sure he had a fondness for the herb (most people did) but he only seemed to encounter it when they were waving it in his face as though trying to banish a demon. He collapsed into a waiting chair facing the table with the lavender. It really was rather nice of them to decorate the space. He breathed in a pleasant sent that triggered memories of far better times, memories mostly sacrificed to the cause. Ghosts of them remained. It was enough.
