Description
Here is my first test of the reversing ring. I was using the lens that came with the D40 (15-55 AF). When using the reversing ring, you must use the manual mode (M on the dial) or it will warn you with "no lens attached" and not let you shoot. I took a few shots and put them in this three-part image for comparison. The download is 1050 x 600 if you are interested. That works out to each "slice" of marble being 50% of the original photo size.
In the first one, I didn't use the reversing ring, and I used the "no flash" setting. Manual focus but everything else auto. It decided to use 1/6 sec exposure and ISO 1600.
For the second one, I used the reversing ring. You can see by the size that we were able to zoom in much closer. I set the exposure time to 2 sec. I used the default 800 ISO. Although 2 seconds is a long time compared to 1/6 of a second, you can see it is very dark.
For the third, I changed it to 10 sec exposure and ISO 1600. It brightened it up a lot, as you can see. Probably a bit too much.
Anyway, this was normal indoor lighting in the afternoon. Might get better light on a bright sunny day outside, but I would expect you would still want to use a tripod and maybe a remote so that you don't get blur. And this of course assumes your subject is stationary. So not too great for running around taking pictures of butterflies.
But if you want to set up a light box to shoot some macro shots of stuff that doesn't move, this reversing ring would probably work very well for you! Hopefully I can do some of that in the future.
If you want the full size images of each of the 3 just to compare, let me know and I'll post them up here too.

Now I'm waiting for a small tripod for Christmas so I can use it more. If you are watching, you can probably expect to see some macros of wrapping paper and bows and such in the week following Christmas.
