History:
During the Paleozoic era, life was still beginning to evolve, and as such, the deities that managed it experimented with a wide variety of different forms. Some worked where others didn't, and vice versa. Chief among the concepts behind life and its many different forms was the evolutionary arms race that fine-tuned the many, many links in the worldwide food web. It was this arms race that led, sometime during the Silurian period, to the development of one of evolution's great success stories.
Like most predators, it started out small, but already fierce and headstrong. Its base clade, a relatively recent creation at the time, was the jawed fish, whose anterior gill support arches had been modified to pump water over the gills by opening and closing the mouth, in what is known today as the buccal pump mechanism. Once the fish discovered that this same mechanism could be used to catch prey, they expanded upon it, and soon patented the vertebrate jaw. This fish came from a particular class of jawed fish, the cartilaginous fish; it was a predator by nature, and it competed fiercely with its own siblings even within its progenitor's womb, polishing them off one by one. After living on a steady stream of eggs and embryos for an unknown time, it emerged into the world with all the ferocity and readiness to fight for survival as any other member of its kind. It would eat literally anything that wandered into its mouth, and it would lurk in the cover of rocks, silt, and weeds, darting out to sink its teeth into prey and predator alike. This fiesty demeanor earned the attention and the approval of Mana himself, who knew a warrior when he saw it even this early in life. The fish grew, and ate, and grew even more; as an adolescent, it found itself in the middle of a storm, but it braved the rough water, snapping at it as it went. This same storm struck the then barren coastline, devoid of land vertebrates and plants back then, and dislodged a mana deposit with properties similar to those of several kinds of metals. It fell into the water, sinking like the stone it was, and as soon as the fish detected it, the first thing it did was barrel straight at it and swallow it whole.
Inside its stomach, the mana deposit did what it was meant to do. The shark grew, and so did its appetite. Its resultant tussles with other life-forms taught it the meaning of survival, the meaning of combat. Its senses became sharper - it developed acuity in its lateral line, its snout sensor, and its eyes, for this was when it still had them. Its fins grew razor-sharp edges to slash with, and its teeth became so long and sharp that they could easily rip through fish scales like tissue paper. This was a kaiju that showed a lot of promise, and by the time he was an adult, Mana decided that now was the time to tell him of the Paleozoic Grand Terra Tournament (the only Terra Tournament at the time, for this was before subcategories were finalized) - but first, he desired a name, for identification purposes. Mana named him "Khondryk", meaning "Flex-Boned Fish" in the ancient tongue used by the life-forms of the era. As the tournament came into existence with all the fanfare you'd expect, Khondryk was not only ready to battle, but eager too.
As Khondryk began progressing into the tournament, his years of combat practice paid off, turning competition into carnage as he rampaged across the world's oceans. At this stage of geological history, life was already beginning to diversify into a wide variety of forms which produced deadly and dangerous kaiju of many shapes and sizes. Fish were revolutionary at this stage, and recieved the most support and good press, but under no means were other life forms left out of the fun. Brachiopods, bryozoa, molluscs, worms, and of course, arthropods of many different forms all sent forth contestants. The jawed fish were formidable adversaries, but the arthropods in particular were also at the top of their game, having evolved first. Khondryk had no trouble blazing through the first-round matches, but he was soon to discover that some of his competitors weren't going to give in so easily.
One such competitor came from a clade that is now no more, but remains recognizable to sentients with a good knowledge of natural history. This alien-looking nightmare had four razor-like claws, many walking legs, and a long, deadly tail with a poisonous stinger at the tip. It prowled along the seabed, terrorizing all that came within its sensory range, attacking whatever disturbed its progress. This was an abberant, a mutation spawned from the Eurypterid group, and this was the beast that Khondryk was scheduled to battle in this round. Its aggressive behavior attracted Khondryk, who was already developing an interest in fighting other monsters and felt highly self-confident that he would figuratively kick his next opponent to the curb an eternity before streets were even conceived. The eurypterid's telson twitched involuntarily as it detected another presence, but under the cover of the weed field that was supposed to be the designated arena for this match, it couldn't draw a bead on the intruder and could only raise its tail and claws in a defensive position. Khondryk could see the creature from the cover of the weed but he wasn't sure what to do, because he had no idea how to react. Instead of charging in outright, the fish glided into view slowly, delivering his usual challenge declaration. Said delcaration was met by the deadly telson being thrust right at his face... and into his left eye. Khondryk was literally incapable of screaming in pain; he could only feel the acid melting his eye to oblivion and the moment he realized that he would never be able to see through that eye ever again, he flat-out exploded. The tailfin thrashed so violently that he essentially shot like a torpedo straight into the mutant's face with a sickening crunch. The sea scorpion responded by lashing out with its pincers, seizing his right blade fin and attempting to tear it off. The shark responded by snapping violently at the offending implement, his teeth grazing against the armor until they found purchase on the joint where the arm connected to the body. The scorpion relinquished its grip in an attempt to shake him free, managing a partial success as several of his teeth lodged themselves into the joint. Khondryk knew that he couldn't bite through the armor but he recognized the joints on the limbs and the vulnerable head, and made those his first priority. Especially the head. The eurypterid swung its pincers upwards, its larger left claw limp from several major nerves being severed; however, Khondryk anticipated this ploy and hugged the seafloor as he charged, dodging the pincers as they tried to move downward. However, he had failed to factor in the tail which, just as he was about to engulf the creature's face in his mouth, struck down and impaled his other eye. Acid screamed through both of Khondryk's eye sockets now, he was effectively swimming blind. He now had only his electro-sense, smell, and lateral line to guide him; the scorpion had used his enemy's own tunnel vision to blind him and make him more vulnerable. Angered and humiliated by his own stupidity, the shark was forced to rethink his strategy of taking the foe head-on. He couldn't see anymore but, as he circled the eurypterid he noticed that it always turned so that the tip of its tail, waving over its head, was always pointed in his direction. A few logical steps later and he realized that the creature most often used its tail to attack. A new plan fresh in his head, he barreled in for the next attack; the scorpion arced its tail high, aiming to drive it into Khondryk's brain. At the last second, however, Khondryk swerved to the side and the tail narrowly missed; the instant he saw the vulnerability, Khondryk lashed out at the base of the tail, biting hard at the joints. It instantly went limp and Khondryk swam upwards, taking his opponent with him. The scorpion thought he would breach the water and fling him far and wide, but then he let go and dove back down, leaving it to drift through the water with no idea where his foe had gone. With its tail disabled it thrashed about in a panic, trying to sense its adversary, when the weed below parted and Khondryk surged upwards, straight at its head. There was a horrible crunching sound as teeth like razors sank deep into the weaker armor covering its face, severing the vital nerves and respiratory channel. In that instant, it was all over, and the scorpion sank down into the weed, its reign of terror over at last. Unable to eat the loser of this match, Khondryk vanished into the deep, intending to get as far away from the conflict as possible, literally unable to spare a single backwards glance towards his fallen adversary.
The Sea Squire, as he was referred to in the aftermath of this match in particular, did not realize that he had made a mortal enemy that day. But he did know full well that the tournament would give him friends as well. Of course, most kaiju knew all too well of his ferocity in battle and gave him a wide berth, but there were some who discovered his softer side, and considered him as an important component of the oceanic ecosystem. A soft-bodied octopus, with many staring eyes, was among the kaiju he faced. Considering its lack of armor and its reluctance to fight, Khondryk was certain that it would be an easy kill. This proved not to be the case as Occtulus made himself scarce, attacking from a distance. Khondryk was flustered by the way the Benthic Eyes was capable of making the fight relatively even despite being cornered, but eventually he managed to flush out his cephalopod rival and cripple him. Occtulus had never wanted to fight, and once Khondryk realized that he had basically been beating up an innocent life form that had been dragged into a competition he did not want to be involved in, his guilt led him to return Occtulus to his remaining family and explain himself to them. This earned their respect, and Khondryk developed an alliance with both Occtulus and his brother, the crustacean Carcinos. They provided him with comfort and support as he headed into the semifinals.
All this time, Khondryk had feared that he would have to face a placoderm. His teeth were not built for piercing their tough armor, and they were simply too physically powerful for him to handle. The semifinals, which took place sometime during the Devonian, pitted him against one of the last of the placoderms, a monstrous, hulking leviathan reminiscent of the Dunkleosteus, with plates of bone that could potentially shear victims in half. This match took place in the open ocean where both of them had free reign over movement, with no obstacles at all. Khondryk was outmatched in both attack and defense; the only thing he had on his side was his speed. This was rendered null when the creature demonstrated the ability to create a powerful suction that pulled water (and prey) into its mouth... and then spit it back out in a deadly pressurized blast. With the very current working against him, Khondryk was rendered helpless as the deadly predator repeatedly sucked him into its deadly maw, shearing through his scale mail skin, before regurgitating him in a worse state than before. In desperation, Khondryk tried to think of other ways to offset the placoderm's ability instead of just swimming away in a straight line. That wasted the most energy. The next time the creature used its suction power, he twisted sideways and swam diagonally, just barely managing to avoid the deadly jaws, only to be blindsided by the outwards blast. One more hit and he was down for the count. In desperation he tried to escape but found himself caught in the same suction and tried again; this time, however, as the creature unloaded he whirled and made the same sucking action himself, before "returning fire". A blast of boiling water hit the creature's armored head and, enraged, it lunged forward, its jaws aiming to kill, engulfing Khondryk's entire head in its mouth. Khondryk let loose all the pressurized, superheated water in his water bladder and basically flash-boiled the creature's insides forcing it to spit him back out. But that was literally the only serious injury the placoderm sustained and, at his limit, Khondryk sank into the deep, blood trailing from his mangled body. The match was called, but the placoderm wanted a victory feast and prepared to finish him off when, with a flash of great tentacles, something enormous seized Khondryk, cradling him protectively as its huge pincers thrust and struck at the placoderm, who took a blow to the head that barely nicked it. Frustrated, but now with a bigger meal in mind, the monster swam off, leaving Krak'eann to divulge to Khondryk that they had the last laugh. Krak'eann had made it to the finals and, because the placoderm had mutilated his trusted bodyguard, vengeance would soon be his.
The survivors of the tournament were given the basal roles related to life. Khondryk was given the role of the evolutionary arms race that had fine-tuned him almost to perfection. Almost. The shark was relieved to hear that the placoderm hadn't survived the final match despite putting up a very hard fight, and by the end of the Devonian he finally had some room to breathe, since the placoderms had become extinct after barely 50 million years. The Carboniferous saw a major evolutionary radiation in sharks due to the ecological niches that were left by the disappearance of the placoderms. Along with the generic concepts of biological competition, adaptation, and co-evolution, Khondryk had free reign over sharks and thus his class experimented with a wide variety of different fin shapes and lifestyles. They remained in the middle of the food chain, and since they remained confined to the oceans the sharks would have the spotlight temporarily stolen from them by the rise of amphibians and the ceding of the world's landmasses by the arthropods to the tetrapods that would give rise to the reptilian and mammalian clades. To counteract this, Khondryk attempted breaching the boundary between sea and land; a second set of pectoral fins grew from its body, and they became modified into a shape not unlike vertebrate limbs. No amphibious sharks are known from the fossil record, however, so even though his own sojurn onto land was moderately successful, the overall conquest probably didn't get very far.
Sharks did return to the spotlight to some extent later, however. The Mesozoic was a momentous time for both marine and terrestrial fauna, including sharks of course. However, Khondryk and his sea monster peers found himself overshadowed and preyed upon by a multitude of large, dangerous marine kaiju of the reptilian kind. First icthyosaurs which blatantly ripped off the shark sillouhette via convergent evolution, then plesiosaurs of the long- and short-necked kind kept sharks from reaching the top of the food chain. This frustrated Khondryk to no end and, to try and make an example of them, he registered for the second Terra Tournament, specifically the sector related to aquatic fauna. This one saw him skyrocketing to first place, beating the more cumbersome (at least in his domain) amphibious sauropod kaiju known as Mokele Mbembe by a fair margin. For this he was anoited as the guardian of the world's oceans, ensuring that his kind would continue to survive into the Cretaceous period. The Ginsu Shark, similar to the Quaternary great white, was one of the most feared predators of the Western Interior Seaway, capable of hunting and eating anything it came across - until mosasaurs such as Tylosaurus hunted it to extinction. Khondryk was rightfully insulted, but given the circumstances he was forced to suck it all up and hold out until the end of the Cretaceous, when most of the surviving Terra Guards were forced into hibernation and the nonavian dinosaurs became extinct on Earth. The situation was made even worse because, at the same time, the eurypterid foe that had busted both of his eyes had, against astronomical odds, risen from the fossil strata from 360 million years prior. The Sea Squire had every reason to feel terrified for the very first time when he discovered this, and knew full well that there was a third party involved the moment the creature attacked him and his allies. Occtulus was horribly crippled, but Khondryk and Carcinos managed to fend off the sea scorpion despite sustaining injury themselves; however they would soon have worse things to deal with because they were now at risk from the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction event. Just in the nick of time, Krak'eann alerted them to what was happening and, having somehow discovered a dimensional rift that led to the Plane of Water, successfully guided the remnants of his family to safety.
Khondryk was left to wander the pelagic zone after the Trinity of Evolution was separated, hunting for himself and his family. He wasn't, however, about to give up so easily, and not long afterward he ducked back through the dimensional rift... and discovered that the extinction of the dinosaurs and their peers had left literally no life forms around to feed on the sharks. Finally, Khondryk and his kind had the seas all to themselves, and they were once again free to radiate into diverse and deadly forms, while Khondryk himself perfected the streamlined, razor-sharp physique that he retains today. On land, the mammals outcompeted the other vertebrates and became the dominant terrestrial clade, and some returned to the water and evolved into many seagoing forms including toothed whales. Khondryk's kin happily ate many of those, but there did evolve forms large enough to prey on them as their predecessors had done. The sharks countered by producing, among other forms, the Megalodon, a veritable sub-kaiju that preyed on whales. It worked, at least for a time; though Megalodon did eventually go extinct, sharks remained the ocean's top predators until humans took to the seas following the rise of man. This was when Khondryk returned to the Water Plane, visiting his caretaker in secret and confessing that he had wandered off on his own. Krak'eann was both upset that Khondryk had departed without telling him and relieved that he was still alive, but Khondryk complained that his clade was being hunted once more and that sharks could never catch a break, even after 400 million years of fighting for survival. Krak'eann responded that he had been keeping track of civilization, and it was the humans' decision regarding their treatment of sharks, not Khondryk's; the best policy was to leave them alone, because they were too dangerous to prey on. Sound advice - the spread of civilization led to the first Superwar which took a fierce toll on cartilaginous fish and on sea life in general. But some of Khondryk's representatives did survive, and continue to patrol the oceans to this day. The surviving humans who stayed on the surface world finally understood that their own arms race among each other was damaging the environment in general, and came to respect and care for the world's species, including sharks. Like other kaiju, Khondryk joined Kaiju Klash not long after it was founded, and discovered a sentient partner in the form of Max Kelp, a respected Sapient fisherman from the FireWater Archipelago (formerly Hawaii) who had discovered the meaning of courage and respect during his 18th birthday, specifically his rite of passage - i.e. losing part of his right arm in the mandatory fishing trip that marked this date and that had ended with a shark attack. Recognizing that both of them were proud, noble warriors who never went down without a fight, they decided to cooperate with each other. This alliance would prove instrumental, because the rise of Orochi meant that Khondryk would have to reunite the rest of the world's sea monsters - starting with the other two members of the Trinity of Evolution.

Personality and Fighting Style:
Despite being outwardly single-minded and predatory, Khondryk is a passionate creature within, and can be counted on to go down fighting regardless of the circumstances. He is popularly depicted as a dangerous eating machine who should be avoided at all costs, but only the first part of that description is true and even then not entirely. While outwardly good-natured and easy-going he is in fact straightforward and more importantly, dedicated to protecting his aquatic peers, stalking and attacking anything that threatens them. In his early years he acted rather childishly, lashing out at things that provoked him, but after wounding more than a few colleagues in this manner he has learned to hold himself back when the going gets tough. Nonetheless, he relies primarily on his mentor and caretaker, Krak'eann, for advice and consultation.
Even without the Overseer, however, he revels in his status as an apex predator and a born leader, the one who always leads the charge. While his self-confidence and charismic nature make him ideal for this job, but they also bring several setbacks. His inability to sense psionic energy means he has difficulties with judging the emotions of his peers and often has to rely on what they outwardly say, making it difficult for him to trust decisions outright. His dedication to his goals also gives him a severe case of tunnel vision often at the worst times (which was one of the reasons that he only made the runner-up position in the Paleozoic Grand Terra Tournament). Because of these flaws he has learned to think before he acts, always scouting for enough evidence to back up his opinions, claims, and motivations - and in a world where anything is possible, the Sea Squire can never be too careful.
Like most sharks, Khondryk generally avoids trouble but isn't afraid to get into a fight. He isn't thrown into a frenzy by the whiff of blood but, should things get ugly, he will join in to defend his friends or fend off antagonists. Melee combat is his specialty, and his best strategy is to cut in close so his sharp edges can deliver the most damage. He uses his fins and teeth as much as possible to end the fight fast, but he is also quite honorable due to his personal obligations, only handing you enough damage to teach you not to screw around with him or his allies - well, unless you're totally screwed up yourself. If he is certain that this is the case, Khondryk himself puts it best: "You know, we DO have euthanasia..."

Moveset:
Melee - Balanced Combatant: Khondryk may be a benevolent creature in the long run, but no-one messes with the Sea Squire, and for good reason. In combat he provides an equal mix of offense, defense, and speed, without specialization in any but nonetheless powerful in terms of each. His streamlined body has been armed with fins and teeth like razor-blades since day one, and is protected by metallic denticles all over that look and feel exactly like scale-armor and obviously serve the exact same purpose. Neither he nor his clade of origin have changed their basic design since 400 million years; only one change was required to meet the standards of the Terra Tournaments and that was adapting his fins into "legs," enabling him to move on land, but overall, his body structure is one that works, within battle and without.
---------- Slasher Smile (Strike 1): Named for the way it pushes forward in a menacing "grin" just before it sinks into something fresh, Khondryk's mouth is armed with many rows of razor-sharp teeth. The jaws are not fixed to the skull, and this loose-jaw arrangement allows him to push his jaws forward so that all of the teeth can sink into the victim. Said teeth are dagger-shaped to grip slippery prey and serrated to slice through flesh, and the enamel that coats them contains the metallic ions that comprise the rest of his body, making them more durable and able to sustain their edge. They aren't unbreakable, however, so they are arranged in typical conveyor-belt fashion, so when one falls out the next rotates into position, keeping the full set as good, sharp and dangerous as new.
---------- Razor Fins (Strike 2): Towards the front edges of his fins, the denticles rapidly decrease in size but increase in number until eventually they fuse together, forming a flexible, metallic cutting edge. This property is normally used in parallel with the narrow width of the fins to aid in streamlining by cutting through the water, but they are just as useful in combat - a casual slash can make a clean cut through reinforced steel.
---------- Snout Slam (Charge): The snout of this beast is flattened and has blade-like projections on the sides that bear the same metallic edges as the fins. He leads with his nose and, should he hit you with his snout, the blades can slice flesh without even having to bite.
---------- Breaching Leap (Jump-Strike): Like other sharks, Khondryk attacks from below. Getting under his victim, he either rushes or jumps, snout or teeth first; if he misses he can always arc back down and aim from above, though this is usually less effective. Nonetheless, the impact is like a bullet train, only ten times as big - and moving at 150-190 mph, it's safe to say that even without the use of the teeth, getting hit by him at full charge can and will be extremely painful.
---------- Fin Claws (Combo 1): Khondryk actually has two sets of pectoral fins. One is the standard set that is used to provide upward thrust in the water and stabilize his body; the other has a cartilage system that is convergently similar to vertebrate limbs. Metal-edged digits work like claws, capable of shredding flesh from bone - or hauling his body onto rocks when he comes ashore (see Amphibious below).
---------- Gnash and Thrash (Combo 2): This is a holding bite attack, which sharks are infamous for to this day. Khondryk sinks his teeth into his opponent and holds down, shaking his body violently to provide leverage whilst tearing off great chunks of flesh.
---------- Spin Attack (Combo 3): This attack uses his fins and a variant on the ramming motion. By powering one of his thruster vent instead of both (see Scalding Shot), he can spin in a tight circle. Anything that gets too close will have to risk being sliced by knife-like fins moving at 30 rotations per second.
Ranged - Scalding Shot: The "swim bladder" holds and compresses water that he uses for above-water respiration. The mana gland connected to the bladder provides enough energy to heat the water into steam, which is normally blasted from discharge vents at the back of the thrusters on each side of the dorsal fin. It can however be blasted forward through frontal vents, either as steam or as boiling water, in the form of concentrated projectiles for the former and pressurized jets for the latter.
Short-Range Special - Scalding Mist: When sprayed from both ends of the thrusters, the steam jets cancel out each other. Thus, by standing still, Khondryk can cover an area around him in a boiling mist that only he is immune to. This is usually used to incapacitate an opponent so he can cover his escape - or ambush while the enemy is vulnerable.
Long-Range Special - Plasma Cannon: This is the ultimate use of the swim bladder and his most powerful attack. The mana gland and the water bladder work together to pressurize and charge the water into a mass of concentrated plasma, which can be fired in streams through the shoulder turbines or blasted like a torpedo back out the mouth with devestating force. While it can be used out of the water with a big enough fuel supply, it works best underwater, where theoretically infinite ammo to charge with makes it possible to shoot more and bigger projectiles than would be possible on land.

Powers/Abilities:
Shark of All Stats: Hardy and adaptable, Khondryk has felt no need to alter his body plan on a grand scale like many other Terra Guards, although he has had to fine-tune it every once in a while. He is not only well-armed but also fast, but despite his slender appearance, though, he is no way delicate - his skin is covered in denticles that protect him and also reduce drag. Unusually, he absorbs metal ions from his water intake as well as oxygen; these are transferred to the scales and teeth, so this protective scale-mail is constantly replenished.
Swift Swim: Like all sharks, Khondryk is as fast a swimmer as he is a powerful one. His streamlined shape cuts through the water like a knife, and at cruising speed he can clear 50 mph. Top speed involves use of the thrusters on the sides of his dorsal fin, which allow him to jet through the water at over 150 mph, tucking his leg-fins close to his body to reduce water resistance.
Amphibious: See Fin Claws above. While most comfortable in the water, he is equally competent on land; when running, the pectoral leg fins literally paddle over the ground at up to 50 mph, leaving a distinctive set of lizard-like foreleg/tail tracks.
Super Senses: Though he lacks true eyes, Khondryk more than makes up for it with incredibly powerful senses. His sense of smell is very strong, allowing him to pick up one part per million of blood in seawater; he does not go into a frenzy the moment he smells blood, it just homes him towards the source. The bioluinescent organs running down his body also serve as pressure sensors, giving him the ability to detect vibrations coming in at any direction and hear exceptionally well. Most crucially, his snout has expanded upon its the network of energy-sensors, and they are now capable of detecting electricity, light, and mana. The resultant panoramic sensory field is effective over a radius of up to around 5-6 miles, making him literally impossible to surprise.

Weaknesses:
Master of None: Despite having many combat strengths, Khondryk is not specialized in any of them. While being generalized is generally a good thing, this balance has the downside of making him somewhat underpowered relative to other kaiju that would be able to handle specific situations better. He is not as fast as Ophiomega, not as agile as Occtulus, not as powerful as Carcinos, etc.
Shark Fin Soup: Aiming for the fins is a useful tactic for a ranged combatant. He has no energy-based attacks aside from the Plasma Cannon, and the luminescent patches on his fins are like big "hit me" signs, indicating that when the fins are disabled, it makes it a lot harder for him to swim.
Ammunition Limit: Khondryk can only hold so much water in his water bladder, up to a quarter his own weight. He prefers melee combat above the water, as each ranged blast not only reduces his breathing ability, but also wastes the water needed for respiration very quickly.
Glowy Red Targets: Like the patches on his fins, the light organs on his body are not as strong as his denticle mail. Conventional military fire can damage them easily, and to add insult to injury the act of damaging them rapidly impairs his sensory field. This makes them the first targets in a fight, especially in melee combat and ESPECIALLY on his sensitive snout.

Theme Song: Evile - Killer From The Deep

****************************************

It's Shark Week, and other people are cranking out shark-themed kaiju in honor of this occasion. So I figured I'd jump on the bandwagon and finish up Khondryk's stats and bio.
Since I already covered his design aspects in his concept sketches, the rest pretty much speaks for itself. I think I did a good job with him overall, and that's a good thing because this guy is the leader of the Sea Monsters team. As such, though they aren't the narrators, he and his partner are the actual characters who drive the plot of the fourth installment of KK, Dangerous Waters.
