Description
"Cael!"The boy raised his arms defensively as he spun towards the sound of his name. He expected a nightmare, a scolding, a beating even. His limbs trembled in weakness and fear even now, but what he faced was not what he expected.
He barely caught a glimpse, just a flash of white teeth as the ear-to-ear grin passed right by his face. Cael flinched in fright, then stiffened when strong arms gripped him around the shoulders, lifting him up to his toes in a squeeze. His arms fell limp. The boy might have fallen over when he was dropped down again except that the arms still held him up where he stood.
Cael felt the blonde hairs against his cheek, near his eye, and when he inhaled his nostrils were filled with the smell of cigarette smoke.
"Sal?"
His answer was not words, but a rumble of laughter that Cael could feel against his chest. The boy's throat tightened. His eyes stung and though he blinked and furrowed his brow, he couldn't fight it any longer. Like a kick to the ribs, it all hit him at once.
As he buried his face in the collar of Sal's shirt, he started to sob. He whimpered, pathetic, like an injured dog, as he hugged the man back. For once there were no cruel comments, no harsh judgments, no angry disapproval - only comfort.
Sal's quiet embrace held Cael and let him cry.
A scene from my NaNoWriMo 2012~
Just some doodle sketches. I will probably re-draw it better some other time because I like this part. It made me happy to write.
Sometimes after I torture my characters enough, I give them a break.
sometimes
I have no idea.
