Red songs inspired this novel I'm working on, my story for NaNoWriMo 2012 that is not yet complete.
It's about dreams.
These two characters are a shape-shifting nightmare boy and a flying flower-power dream girl - both dreams of my fourteen year old protagonist Cael.
I read that people in dreams are never actually made up (as the mind can't make up faces) so the nightmare has Cael himself's face (usually, it changes form sometimes), and the dream takes the face of a woman who showed Cael kindness.
Cael also has nightmares about cats, and some about birds and flying, so the nightmare regularly shapeshifts into those two things. But, since the nightmare is actually formed out of Cael's own insecurity and self-loathing, its shapeshifting gets stuck sometimes and it messes up a lot, hence being stuck between cat-form an Cael-form. Even when it's a bird, it can't fly properly.
Maybe they'll fall in love. Idk.
SO ANYWAYS.
This is my first drawing of 2013! Woo! Here's to a year of hopeful awesome improvement. This will be my starting point.

I think the composition and anatomy is just perfect
The story is very interesting as well, I didnt know that we were unable to imagine faces in dreams? I never actually know who the people in my dreams are anyways xD this was interesttingto learn!

Yeah, I've read it several times in different articles. Supposedly, even if it's just some stranger you've seen on the street and barely remember, every face you see in your dreams belongs to someone you've seen in real life.
Although occasionally I dream in cartoons, but I think they're still familiar characters - or my own drawings.

Wow, I am INCREDIBLY glad I clicked on this when I saw it in my inbox... I am so intrigued by your artist's description, and I would definitely love to see a finished version of the story, or any version of the story that you happen to have.
I did not know that about dreams and faces, but I'll definitely start looking that kind of stuff up now... But this is such an intriguing idea, particularly because it somehow rings true to me... I've gotten that feeling that Cael has had before, of being "stuck". If I have a nightmare, even if I can fly, I can't do it freely or correctly, so that just... That kind of pinpointed some of my feelings.
This sounds like a terrific idea, really, and I definitely encourage you work through it! The poses and expressions in your piece are incredible, and I can just sense the dream-like atmosphere... Cael's expression and pose really get to me, though, because I do kind of feel that sense of longing from him, reaching upward, trying to move past the insecurity you say he has...

Wow! First of all, thank you so much for the comment. I love any feedback at all, but this is probably the best comment I've ever received on one of my deviations!
I also find that, especially when I was younger, in my dreams and most of all in my nightmares I was always somehow paralyzed or limited, and that's kind of where I drew the inspiration from. I'm really glad to hear that others can also relate - even if it's not necessarily the best experience.
Thank you again so much for the encouragement. The story itself is going to take a lot more writing and then re-writing and editing, but I'm really enjoying it and hopefully something good will come from it. Most likely I'll be doing more illustrations as well.
