Description The first portrait in my series of people who live and work in New York. An MTA construction worker and his partner taking a quick break to confer. Construction is an ongoing process in New York in order to reinvent some of the city's more destitute areas. It is hard to go virtually anywhere in all of the city without seeing some form of construction going on somewhere, be it in the subway, the streets or on a building. This portrait captures a brief moment of stillness in an ever on the move environment.

Full view for best possible detail.

This is the original version of the portrait, desaturated. The car was already blurred when I took it. I blurred it a little furter to give the image a slightly more fast paced look.

I am also posting the image with a vivid light blend. I would really like some critiques on both of these, what people like, don't like, opinions on exposure/lighting, etc. And please let me know which of the two you like better. Thanks.
Vivid Still Here is the vivid light version.

i really like black and whit pics,
but this one is special in a certain way.
the attention is perfectly drawn to the workers, which in a certain way tell a story.
but u can also apreciate their environment perfectly.
i like the dunno the right word for that effect, in 3D we call it Motion Blur
on the car, it is pretty cool.
the composition of the pic is just perfect in my opinion.
this shot is very urban as i like it!
great work!

thank you very much. i did increase the blur with photoshop. i dont remember now which blur i used, either motion or radial i think. this was actually a really quick shot. I saw these guys as I was passing by to the train station and everything just looked perfect.

Very cool effect. I like how still and unmoving they looked compared to the rest of the image which seems to be flying by. Everyone else is in a rush to be somewhere, but these guys constantly have to work on something - so why not just stop and smell the roses? Nice use of black and white.

I much prefer this to the vivid one. It's much clearer and not as harsh to look at. The blurring of the car is a really nice touch, not something I would've thought of at the time, well done. It would have been a little nicer had the blurring been stronger but as you said, you already blurred it a bit in post. Maybe something to consider for next time. Very nice photo.

Thsi really does a good job of capturing the brief glances athat are all you get in big city life, just glances into somebody's life that add to the living, breathing element of the big city. I look forward to the next in the series.

This is really a beautiful B&W. The tonal values, rich blacks and bright whites, really make for a wonderful image. What also is nice about this image is the simple, yet effective comp and the blurriness of the car [or truck] in the backgroundβ€”thought time is moving, this image is able to slow things down a bit to capture a moment in time. Well done!

I love how you made the car faster (i compared with Vivid Still) but the rear end of the car looks like it's not as blurred as the front when you altered it

I love the shot! Lots of highlights and it captures the workers emotion

thanks! the the effect of the blur is mostly due to the blur in the initial photograph i think, possibly the reason why it may look more blurred in front, because i applied the same amout of blur filter to the entire car.
