Description "MY OWN CLONE!! NOW NEITHER OF US WILL BE VIRGINS!!!"

While playing around with my old & first attempt at making a Sonic sprite (or in this case, my very first successful sprite), I had the idea of both sprites meeting each other like the two Sonics in the upcoming Sonic Generations (which at this point is right around the corner right now).

Which sprite looks better is your decision.

Custom Sonic sprites made by me (inspired by & 's ModGen sprite sheets along with the other Sonic sprite sheets). Sonic the Hedgehog belongs to Sega, Sonic Team, DiC/Cookie Jar Entertainment, & Archie Comics.

Haha. Glad you like it & got the joke. Trying to improve these & make them look great is a pain. Wonder if this is like making the microminis Theo used to make?

I like em both, they're both old school with the mohawk. Very cool. Have you animated them?

FirebirdPhoenix87 In reply to Radical-Artist [2011-11-29 15:21:41 +0000 UTC]

No, sadly. I still have to learn how to make the frames & other stuff before animating.

Try googling it. Do you use Photoshop? if so, some tutorials to get started:

Would be great to see these guys move! You could also try using the free version of Game Maker, which has a very simple pixel based animation system, found at the following link.

No I don't have Photoshop, sadly.

Well then maybe try Game Maker. I personally used that for a while when I was just getting started, before I moved on to Photoshop. Just a suggestion. All the best

Sonic fan games are a ton of work dude. Best to find some like minded people who know programming and team up.

Just that that could be a good place to connect with like minded people and find resources. Plenty of classic Sonic Sprites to study how they animated as well from rips.

Alrighty. I was hoping to use the Sonic 2 Beta jogging animation as reference (I'm a sucker for smooth animation).

Radical-Artist In reply to FirebirdPhoenix87 [2011-12-15 01:06:01 +0000 UTC]

Cool, just don't forget to do keyframes, extremes, and in-betweens, in that order. So like, rather than starting at frame 1 and going till frame 8 (which just makes it hard for you to get smooth), do frame 1 then 8, then do frame 5, then between 1 and 5 do 3, using 1 and 5 as a references, then between 1 and 3 do 2 with 1 and 3 as a reference, and so on. That leads to smooth animation, using the frames you've already done, so you know where your animation starts and finishes. Sorry if you already knew that, just trying to help

Well I still have to figure out how to turn the head when he jogs but OK.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Radical-Artist In reply to FirebirdPhoenix87 [2011-12-15 23:33:21 +0000 UTC]

Well, that's why you do it one bit at a time. Instead of trying to animate his whole body at once, you can try animating his feet first, then his stomach, then his head, etc. It makes it simpler if you break it down, worth trying.

FirebirdPhoenix87 In reply to Radical-Artist [2011-12-16 14:17:25 +0000 UTC]

OK. Well thank goodness for reference but hoping to find a tutorial on how to "turn" the sprites. Once I learn how to do that, then I can make the animating frames. I think I can try going for no more than 12 or 14 frames for jogging & 8 or 10 for the "spinny feet" (12 if I have to I guess). Or should I just try & use reference from other sprites to get it first?

Radical-Artist In reply to FirebirdPhoenix87 [2011-12-19 14:04:08 +0000 UTC]

what do you mean by "turn"? To be honest, I think you're starting with something very hard for an introduction to pixel art, but then again, that's what I did too, a Sonic (and now regret lol). Commander Keen for the win. In any case, definitely make the most you can of references. Once you understand how they do it, then you can do your own. I literally learned to draw from tracing, that's what most kids do, I think. So references are good, learning what they do.

ah. nah I wouldn't bother with something like that right now, unless you're desperate to - that would be harder than making him run side on.

FirebirdPhoenix87 In reply to Radical-Artist [2011-12-19 23:55:07 +0000 UTC]

Well I'm not gonna do that now; not until I do the jogging animations & other stuff.

Hm? What do you mean? The sprites are two different versions: My first successful attempt & my concept design. Maybe I should make the quills a little longer on the other sprite. :/

LegendySonicFan In reply to FirebirdPhoenix87 [2011-10-30 18:18:23 +0000 UTC]
