Description
Hokun resemble eight-foot-tall sculptures of cloudy green-grey glass. They have six limbs, the rear pair of which are very long and powerful, while the front pair is small and is used to manipulate tools, etc. The middle set is employed for heavy work, grasping, and balance. A Hokun's head is long, vertical ovoid, which a faceted eye set on either side of a central ridge. A set of powerful mandibles occupies a recess at the base of the throat. The most unusual thing about the Hokun, however, is their hard exoskeleton: thinner areas of this are transparent, and even thicker portions (the torso, the skull, etc.) are somewhat translucent. There are two sexes: males and egg-laying females. The Hokun employ a mutation of their own species as riding beasts: these latter creatures are semi-intelligent(as intelligent as an Earth Warhorse), short, squat, and less traslucent, yet are essentially the same species as their riders. Hokun tend to have little individuality and act as a group. In many Hokun cultures, individuals have no personal names or identies but participate in a sort of "group-mind." As far as is known, the Hokun have no religion but only a complex system of prohibitions and commands that stem from the "the World-Mind," as they put ir. The societies in which the Hokun live are diverse: on theit island of Benre Sa, they ride out with long, glass-like lances to hunt humans(who they considered little more then naked animals) and utilise human flesh as food; in other regions the Hokun have enslaved humanity and rule as masters; in a few locales they live as equals with humankind; and on one island humans rule the Hokun and ride the latters' riding beasts themselves! Of all the nonhuman species, the Hokun are perhaps the greatest threat to human hegemony over Tekumel...
