Description
I was standing in line in a 7 Eleven store one fine morning when I glanced over to my right and saw this teen magazine with Emma Watson on the cover. My heart fell. She has grown to become a beautiful young lady, and the quality of the photo was just... ahhhhhh...I couldn't get the image off my mind. "Must..get...copy...must...drawwww...." I just had to. So several days later I was carrying some stuffs for work, lined up at the cashier in a bookstore, when I decided to buy the teen magazine. I didn't give a rat's ass what's inside, I just wanted the cover so I could draw the heroine in HP and the Deathly Hallows.
So here you go.
270mmx380mm 160gsm paper
2H, 4H, H, HB and 2B, regular and mechanical pencils.
Some retouches in Photoshop.

Gorgeous drawing, I spent about five minutes just staring at it. Tips? I'm trying to learn how to do portraits on my own, seeing as my high school doesn't offer any courses for them... And, after my disastrous first attempt (Luna Lovegood), I realized that though I am terrible at realistically drawing the hair, eyes, nose and mouth. Basically, I can do clothing and skin... and that's it.

Hello, Samantha. Thank you for taking interest in my art. I'm no portrait expert, but I'm always willing to share my techniques.
If you're just starting, try practicing first on placement of the eyes, nose, lips and eyebrows on the shape of the face and worry about mastering shading later on. Measure distances first - it is said that the distance between the eyes is equivalent to one eye length. You can also use the eye height as reference to measuring the nose (ie how many eye heights would fit the bridge down to the tip of the nose). Looking at your reference photo, look at which point in the eye the side of the nostrils align with, same goes with the edges of the lips.
Books on drawing anatomy will help you get the basics, but practice is key as always.
If you want cutting edge tutorials on portraits, I suggest you check out the galleries of *akaLilith , ~CataclysmX , ~Lion83 , to name a few. Although with thousands of watchers posting thousands of messages, you'd be pretty lucky to get a reply from them. Oh, =IsaiahS is a nice fellow who replies, too.
You can also refer to youtube portrait tutorials well, at least I get inspiration from them.
Feel free to ask any questions. I, though mediocre my skills are compared to them, will try my best to assist you. You might want to post your works first so we can better assess areas for improvement. Don't be shy - believe me, being an expert is not a requirement here on dA.
