Description
Day 16We finally washed ourselves of the foul smell of that disgusting worm. Though I can still feels, not smell, feels the lingering stench fluttering about in the air. But we must keep going no matter what.
The early route of the forest is not as bad as I thought it would. Bugs chittering. Some foxes and owls here and there, searching for rats to feed their youngs. And the best part is. It is not entirely covered in darkness. The sky in the forest is akin to that of the afternoon. And won’t get any darker until we reach the 300m mark. All is well until we stumbled upon “them”.
100m into the dark forest. We decided to rest and set up camps for the night, well it’s a perpetual afternoon in these part of the forest but you get what I mean. It just our luck that we happened to discovered an acre of fruit bearing trees. The fruit itself was not something I recognize. Given that it looks nothing like any fruit on earth. They are pear-shaped, yellow with peach stripes, pink, soft flesh that taste like ice cream or banana. Everything was perfect at first, we set up camp and prepare to cook some rabbit for the night until we realized something. There were little to no animals around these part of the forest. No birds making nest or feeding the hatchlings, no rabbits digging roots to eat, nothing. It was as if all the animals are afraid of this place. With very little amount of rations left. We decided to have a fruit buffet that night. The harvesting process was lenient to say the least. Afterall, the fruit themselves don’t just grow legs and runaway. That night, we tell scary stories, eating fruit and overall having Avery joyous time at the camp. Just as I was about to peel the fruit on my hand. It suddenly, screech in pain and leap out of my hand, that is when I get to have a better look at what just happened. The “fruit” quickly grows teeth and jump towards me. Dozens of other “fruits” from the pile also came to life and attack us. Using their sharp teeth to attempt to dig into our skin and flesh. It turn out that some of the fruits that we collected were not fruit at all. But fruits of deception. The fancy name given to a species of creature that disguised themselves as well known delicious fruit. Which explain the absents of animals in the area. As these creature must have devoured them all as they attempt to get their hands on the fruits.
it took us not long after to dispose off the creatures and throw them into the fire, but the ensuing chaos has made the rest of the fruits was inedible as they were squished and putrid. We have to left many of them behind.
