Description
YES! After toiling away on this for *checks clock* ... wow, nearly 14 hours straight, this is complete! In short, I wanted to try something new with the Doga software, something I hadn't tried before. What can I say? I like a challenge. Well, while browsing some of the Danny Phantom fanart to be had around here, I noticed many of these artists who can draw the characters really well often gripe that their backgrounds suck. Random brainwave smacked into idea for a challenge, and I set the goal before myself to try and render a cel-shaded "stage" or setting. Trying to recreate the background art style of the cartoon, but in 3-D.
For the record, cel-shading is a pain in the ass, and it's kinda difficult to build a solid 3-D rendition of a cartoon artstyle whose background details aren't hugely consistant between one episode and the next. I used a bunch of screenshots from Seemingly Unnoticeable as my reference material, without which, I would never have pulled it off.
ALSO! If there's any DP fanartist who would like to use a render of this thing for a picture background, don't hestitate to drop me a line. Just make sure to tell me the camera angle, what section of the hallway you'd like to use, etc. I can't draw worth crap, but damnit, I can render backgrounds!
This is only the first such "stage" of a planned several. I intend to revise this one some more and add more detail (the two hallways off the intersection are largely unfinished as of yet), and I plan to attempt other settings from the series.

Thanks! It was a fun challenge since I'd never tried to build anything like that before XD

That looks so cool!
I read the comment with the pale-green halls.... My school doesn't have that at all. It has gray/some blue in the hallways, and all that does is drain your energy....

Whoa, a school without the tacky green? o_O ... Though I suppose gray/blue is pretty close, too.
My worst was my English 101 classroom. A windowless room with florescent lights, white walls, white floors, white markerboard... that fried more than a few brains.

You forgot the trash can!
*grins slyly*
Yes, I am obsessed.
In 'The Fenton Menace'
Danny was blasting at Youngblood, but kept hitting things.
He hit the light, the bulliten board, and a trashcan with one of those cool flippy lids.
Tis on the left, just on the corner.
You dont have to put it up if you dont want to, but that is all my nitpicking has turned up.
Everything else is perfect!
*dances*
You rock!

I'm also missing the school bell
The trash can will probably be a seperate model to be placed inside the hallway model, rather than being built into the hallway model.

That way, once you decide to make a good 3d danny, he can blow up the trashcan!
Whoot!
Today was the last day at our school for seniors! I was drunk on emotions!
(My mood depends on the mood of others. When others are happy, I am, and same thing with sadness.)
I felt like I was going to explode with happyness!

Congrats!
Not sure when/if I'll try and do any of the characters in 3-D. The Doga software doesn't handle organic forms very well, and the DP artstyle really doesn't lend itself to 3-D already. Maybe once I get good with the Maya software....

Well, if I could do that kind of thing (which I cant)
Instead of going for the butch hartman cartoon style, you can round some edges, make things a little more realistic...
There are a lot of good images from the episode 'kindred spirits' of danny from different angles.
You dont have to if you dont want. Im just throwing out suggestions.
I like to do that.

Maybe with the Maya software... Like I said, Doga doesn't do organic forms well at all, period. Butch's art style or otherwise =/

Wow. That's very impressive! Since I was "that" kid in perspective class, I'm rather floored by this. From a technical standpoint, I'm a little iffy on the spacing of the tiles; for some reason they seem very far apart (from the memories of staring down at so many...) but that in no way takes away from the overall impact of the piece. Far and away the best part of it is that overhead light. I can practically hear the flourescents buzzing.

FirefuryAmahira In reply to Firestar9mm [2006-04-26 18:53:02 +0000 UTC]
Heh, thanks ^_^; The texture I used for the tiles gave me absolute grief. They're never the same distance apart in any two screenshots. About the only thing consistant is that the tiles always seem to be pretty large.
And am I the only one who thinks ALL middle/high schools have that tacky pale green color in their hallways? I swear Robert Frost middle school was where they got the interior colors for Casper High. Seriously.

Firestar9mm In reply to FirefuryAmahira [2006-04-26 20:26:22 +0000 UTC]
See, I love that you know that they're not the same space apart in any of the screenshots. I greatly admire people who do their homework when they're creating something.
And no, it's TOTALLY not just you--my high school and my middle school had those colors on the wall, too. Is it a psychological thing? Do they think we'll feel comforted or disarmed by fermented-mint-colored walls rather than a color like red or blue that might actually incite emotion? XD

Heh, I wish I knew. Personally, I always thought it just looked sickening.
And I rather pride myself on being anal-retentive about details when I'm trying to make something. Whether I'm writing OR rendering!

Wow, that looks really good! Though the hallway just seems too wide to me. Excellent job!
π: 0 β©: 1
FirefuryAmahira In reply to Crazy-Onna [2006-03-31 19:50:54 +0000 UTC]
Thanks It's actually not too terribly wide, I just wanted to get as much of the thing into the render as possible, so the camera is zoomed kinda weird, giving things a slight fisheye lens look, making things in the foreground especially seem wide. I think I did build the hallway a tiny bit wide, but that's mostly to facilite the lighting and options for camera placement.
I just wish I had access to the software and my model files so I could do more work on it. I have all these insane plans on the agenda. T_T

I's be awefully greateful!
You did a wonderful job!!

Sure thing, as soon as I get my computer back that has the 3-D model and my rendering software. -_- HP printers are spawned from pure evil, I swear. Installed the printer, and the next day my computer won't so much as boot up!

That kinda sucks, we had to deal with that with a few printers as well.
But, good luck.
And, thanks!
I'll put it to good use, best I can.
