Description After several requests, here is my tutorial for Non-Stretch Fabric Boot Covers! This works for any kind of fabric and uses an invisible zipper closure at the back of the boot cover.

I've made quite a few boot covers, all of them different, but most employing this method. Please let me know if you have any questions!

Tutorial and all images therein are Copyright Fire Lily and FireLilyCosplay.com.

Could you take these boot covers off and switch boot covers? I only have one pair of boots and I need to different designs for two characters.

Yes, that's why they are removable.Β

How do you do the soles of the covers? I have a pair of flats so I don't have the space created by the heel to loop around. Specifically, I got the front part of the cover figured out, but not the back part where the zipper is. Would not having a strip of fabric going under eventually make the boot cover ride up from the back after some walking? Am I making sense/can you understand what I'm trying to ask?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

FireLilyCosplay In reply to RollEXE [2013-10-17 15:25:59 +0000 UTC]

You can either make the covers go over the soles (making a sole piece) or use elastic. It will not "ride up" because you should make it snug enough to fit properly.

Essentially, you are making spats with a zipper in the back. I'm not sure how to explain it further - the pictures show you everything.

My only question:
For a men's pair of boots, it there a way to get the cover on without covering the sole and without damaging the boot?
Since I have a pair of decent jedi costume boots I like to use, but for this particular costume I need them another color (white instead of brown). Ideally I would like to cover all but the sole, but I can't see how I would get the cover to hold snug short of sewing it on. As stated, I like to use these a lot so I don't want to do anything permanent.

Suggestions?

I'm sure you already read all the way through the tutorial where I mention clear vinyl soles, elastic along the bottom hems, lace ups, etc, so that these covers are completely non-permanent. Β They are simply slip covers and do not attach to the boot in any way. Β Try making them into spats (ie sew/attach an elastic band to go underneath the heel cut) or something similar.

Great tutorial! But I was wondering what's the purpose of putting the zipper in upside down? Also, what kind of fabric do you recommend?Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

FireLilyCosplay In reply to sirenite [2013-09-14 20:00:57 +0000 UTC]

It works with any fabric. Β Though I do line flimsy fabrics with twill or something more sturdy so the fabric has a better shape and doesn't rip as easily (flimsy fabric rips very easily).

And you can put the zipper in any way you like. Β Those particular boot covers needed to be more open on the bottom to get the boot in since I reuse the boots quite often. Β If the cover is completely fitted on the bottom (ie has the sipper starting at the bottom), it's harder to slip the boot in and out of the cover.

Hey*

I'm very new at cosplaying and i want to do the black rock shooter boots. I was wondering what fabric should i use, considering cheapest/appropriate? I never made a boot cover.
Thks for the tutorial, its very good and clear.

Since this tutorial is for non-stretch covers, you can use whatever fabric you'd like. Β I'd try to match the costume, personally.

Is this a temporary technique for boot covers? I have a pair of boots I want to make covers for for when I do Luka's JBF and she wears black boots. Except mine are authentic cowboy boots that cost like $200 and I don't want to super glue or whatever anything to them.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

FireLilyCosplay In reply to princess-hylian [2013-08-18 00:56:21 +0000 UTC]

Yes, this is temporary, as I do not mention anything about gluing the covers to the boots.

princess-hylian In reply to FireLilyCosplay [2013-08-19 03:41:04 +0000 UTC]

Oh perfect! Did you use gathering to tightened it around the bottom of the boot? I apologize for my annoying questions.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

FireLilyCosplay In reply to princess-hylian [2013-08-21 07:48:44 +0000 UTC]

Depends on the cover. Β You can see in the tutorial images that I have used lacing, elastic, and additional soles to make the covering tighter, though it isn't always better as the fabric tends to strain when the boots moves.

hi! how would this work with vinyl? i'm trying to make the boot covers. i pin the two fabrics together but ended up taking out the pin and the holes seem noticable.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

FireLilyCosplay In reply to kmforward555 [2013-07-20 22:55:49 +0000 UTC]

Make a cloth pattern first, then transfer it to the vinyl. But make sure to use a heavy fabric like drill cotton or duck cloth to simulate the feel and drape of vinyl.

Does this work just as well with leather/pleather as with normal fabric? Also, can I use velcro instead of zippers? I really don't look forward to bothering with zippers.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

FireLilyCosplay In reply to TimeyWimey-007 [2013-07-15 22:14:33 +0000 UTC]

Yes and yes. Though I don't recommend using Velcro with leather - try straps and buckles instead for a nicer look

this worked really good for me. Had a bit of trouble pining it in the middle of de boot so that when I sew the pieces together the seam would be in the middle of my boot but I did it approximatly and it turn out fine thks a lot for this

Great tutorial! Say that I wanted to sew on elastic straps to go around the sole of the boot rather than completely sew the bottom fabric. How would you suggest I do that?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

FireLilyCosplay In reply to Zephyros-Phoenix [2013-06-21 15:49:46 +0000 UTC]

Just sew them on wherever you want - usually under the arch and the toe.

Pin what? The covers around your leg? Just get a close approximation, then fix the rest while sewing. Or get someone to pin it for you.
