Description After several requests, here is my tutorial for Non-Stretch Fabric Boot Covers! This works for any kind of fabric and uses an invisible zipper closure at the back of the boot cover.

I've made quite a few boot covers, all of them different, but most employing this method. Please let me know if you have any questions!

I just had a pair of boot covers sewn the other day, and when I try to walk while wearing them, they easily slide down my leg; even though their is elastic sewn on the upper part of the boot cover and the bottom of the boot cover is glued to the rubber part of the shoe above the bottom. I was wondering if their is anyway for me to keep the boots from slipping down my leg, even though they are complete, or any tips in general to keep them from sliding down my leg as I walk?

Try tightning the elastic in the thighs and sewing the cover to be tighter on your leg.

If you are using elastic in the thighs, make sure to always stretch out the elastic before installing it. If you don't, it will stretch while you wear it and then it will sag.

Hmm.. thank you, but how would you tighten the elastic exactly?

FireLilyCosplay In reply to Renaul [2013-04-30 23:10:59 +0000 UTC]

Take them out. Make them smaller around (smaller circumference), then sew back together. It should fit very snugly around your thigh.

If you've already sewn the elastic to the fabric instead of encasing them in the hem, you will have to either sew the cover seams to be smaller and fit more tightly, or you can fold the hem over completely and slip in a smaller elastic band to fit your thigh.

How did you make the boot covers with the front corset lacing there at the bottom?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FireLilyCosplay In reply to Soleil00 [2013-04-13 00:27:48 +0000 UTC]

The lacing is fake. I sewing the criss-crosses on, then covered the edges with piping.

I have a question about when the boot cover is taller than the actual boot itself- what material should I use to make it stiff and stand up? I can see you put something in the blue boots but I can't really tell what it is.... =x

FireLilyCosplay In reply to thewordlesssignature [2013-03-17 19:19:18 +0000 UTC]

Interfacing or a strong cotton like twill will do just fine.

If you're making a cover that is taller than a base boot, how do you stop it from falling down once it's on? Should you use a heavier fabric or will the zipper support the weight?

In the end, I'm not above spirit gum.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FireLilyCosplay In reply to SilverSkitty [2012-09-03 19:04:01 +0000 UTC]

I use a stiff lining fabric like twill as a base so the fashion fabric is more stable. The zipper doesn't really do much to make the cover stay up.

How long does the zipper has to be? As long as the cover or can it be a bit shorter?

FireLilyCosplay In reply to drokkie [2012-08-14 02:08:49 +0000 UTC]

Just do what you feels best for the cover. You can also make it zip down instead of up (meaning it is closed at the top and open at the bottom), or make it lace up, or any other closure you can think of.

this seems like a really good idea but is their a way i could so the cover so there isnt a seam down the front of the boot?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FireLilyCosplay In reply to jessi-who [2012-07-23 05:15:47 +0000 UTC]

I haven't found one yet, but you are more than welcome to try. Unfortunately, with the curve of the shoe and leg, it's not very easy to achieve.

DarkBunneh In reply to ??? [2012-07-19 21:13:45 +0000 UTC]

That is truly helpful, one thing i want to ask, even if it fits well, wouldn't the bottom part look a bit loose ? ( where the cover and heel part meet, all along the very bottom of the shoe)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FireLilyCosplay In reply to DarkBunneh [2012-07-20 00:00:10 +0000 UTC]

It can be, so a lot of people either glue the cover down (making it permanent), or use elastic or lacing to tighten it. But it can fit very nicely if fitted well to the shoe while sewing.

DarkBunneh In reply to FireLilyCosplay [2012-07-20 06:15:51 +0000 UTC]

oh okay
i have to do covers for Juvia's boots ( [link] ) aand i don't really know what to do, do covers, or buy brand new shoes. Already kiinndaaa spent a lot of monkey xD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FireLilyCosplay In reply to DarkBunneh [2012-07-20 16:51:05 +0000 UTC]

It would be easy enough to make covers and slip them on over existing shoes. If you follow the tutorial and sew the bottom together to cover the toe and sole of the shoe (leaving the heel open), you can just slide them right on. Think of it like a spat or a sock that goes over your shoe.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DarkBunneh In reply to FireLilyCosplay [2012-07-20 17:17:07 +0000 UTC]

then i shall do that! seems way cheaper doing this than buying new shoes (seeing as i already have material)

For the bottom of the boots with the fur, does it lace up like the photo on the boot in the bottom right photo or is it just sewn down the middle and slips over?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FireLilyCosplay In reply to MizukiSora [2012-04-20 01:52:36 +0000 UTC]

No. You can see in the progress pictures that I sewed the purple fabric to snugly fit the boot as a slip on cover.
