Description I know there are a few others out there, but here is my tutorial for Sharpie dyeing a wig! This works best with Kanekalon and other premium synthetic wigs. Eleora and cheaper synthetic wigs may not dye evenly. Make sure to check your wig fiber content before attempting to dye!

I've had a lot of practice with this method, and this is the formula that works best for me, so I hope it can help you dye your wig the custom color you are looking for!

Many thanks to my friend Envel who helped me with my first Sharpie dyeing experience. Tutorial and all images therein are Copyright Fire Lily and FireLilyCosplay.com.

EDIT: Since so many people ask this question, I'm addressing it here. "How do I dye a wig black?" Since Black Sharpies are concentrated purple, you will have to use FW Ink, India Ink, or another Artists Ink and follow the FW Ink Dyeing Method: [link]

Another method is to color/sharpie the wig by hand using a black Sharpie. This will give it a slightly purple sheen, but it will come out black.

Just rinse it in water. I mention that in the tutorial. Avoid regular shampoo or soap due to the alcohol content.

I'm not sure you can use Sharpies to get that color. You'll have to test it yourself - sorry!

Have you been able to wash this out of wigs?Β

No, this is permanent. You can try stripping the color out with rubbing alcohol, but it will stay somewhat stained.

Okay so I have this bright orange wig that I can't do anything with and I wanted to try dying it dark brown. Do you think this method would work?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

FireLilyCosplay In reply to KyonAyanamiChan [2015-06-04 14:52:39 +0000 UTC]

You can certainly try. I'd recommend using artist inks rather than Sharpies to get dark brown, since Sharpie Browns are red based

Hi, I'm trying to find a way to dye doll hair White/silver and was wondering if it's even possible? I've searched everywhere and most people are saying to just reroot the doll but I've never rerooted a doll before and I'm scared I will permanently damage the doll by trying to reroot. So I wanted to see about trying to use dye (possibly with the sharpie method as to not damage the doll hair) so I don't have to worry about messing up the doll's head (plus spending the extra money to buy the extra hair for rerooting) But the color I want/need the hair to be is either WHITE or SILVER, and the doll I'm using is a Monster High doll. If I could get some opinions on this, it will be MUCH appreciated! ;u;

FireLilyCosplay In reply to LinkIsMine [2015-04-05 07:44:18 +0000 UTC]

You can't dye anything white - dye doesn't work that way. You can only dye white hair to silver, and it will most likely only turn grey and slightly sparkled than actual silver. Re-rooting is your only option.

Is there a way I can use some kinda paint-pens or something to color the hair, like by coloring each strand individualy? (btw thanks for replying <3)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

FireLilyCosplay In reply to LinkIsMine [2015-04-05 21:56:02 +0000 UTC]

You can try, but the paint may leave a powdery or gritty residue on the fiber.

Okay I will definitely try and see how it works out. Worst case scenario I'll have to figure out how to re-root the hair. lol
Thanks for the input! (o' u 'o)/

Yes. More so on red based colors, so be sure to rinse all the excess out as much as possible.

Do you think this would work with a lace front wig?
I'm looking into buying a synthetic lace front and the shop that has what i'm looking for unfortunately doesn't have the color I need. Β I'm just worried that if i follow this method it will dye the lace.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

FireLilyCosplay In reply to rosewald [2015-03-03 07:18:39 +0000 UTC]

It may dye the lace, but you can use the rubbing alcohol to clean it off and remove most of the color. A little bit of soap will help clean it further.

Sure. Just separate the wig fibers out that you want to dye and apart them with Sharpie solution.

I've been trying to get the right color for natural looking roots on a blonde wig but my mixtures don't seem to be right. I've looked at other people but can't seem to find one that doesn't have the sharpie mixture made when they go through their tutorial. Any suggestions?!

Not really sure, but maybe try a different medium, like FW ink, copic markers, or just hand marker the roots.

After the wig has been dyed like this, how can you wash it without the color coming out? Or is it just not possible? (as in every time you have to wash it, you have to also re dye it?)

Also, will the wig color sweat onto clothes? Do I have to worry about the color rubbing off onto my clothes?

Thanks for the tutorial~

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

FireLilyCosplay In reply to Sabama [2015-01-18 10:03:15 +0000 UTC]

Once the wig fibers are dyed, they will always retain the new color in some part. And, yes, it will run off into your clothing/skin - more so if it's red or brown or black. That's why you need to remove as much excess color as possible after dyeing.

Hi, thanks for the tutorial! Your wigs look amazing after the dye! Gonna try this to dye my blonde-green wig to a slightly lighter tone.

Have you tried using hairspray on your wigs? Would it make the colour run?

FireLilyCosplay In reply to SugarGaL [2014-10-28 01:06:07 +0000 UTC]

The alcohol content in styling products won't make the color run unless you are using a ton of it or you are styling when wet.

I have a question! How can you dye a black wig? Would fabric paint or even dipping the wig over and over into the sharpie ink work or would it make it shrivel up..?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

FireLilyCosplay In reply to R1THISAK [2014-09-18 01:35:18 +0000 UTC]

You can't dye a black wig.Β  Just like you can't dye anything black to a different color.Β  You can try to paint it, but the wig fiber will suffer.

Now, are you asking how can you dye a wig to a black color?Β  Just get some black ink and go for it

Hello, do you know a way to dye a wig, but that you still can easily remove the color when you are finish cosplaying? I want to buy a rapunzel wig and dye it green for a palutena cosplay, and later use it for a rapunzel cosplay. So do you know a possible way?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

FireLilyCosplay In reply to Selparda [2014-09-06 16:32:19 +0000 UTC]

You can do that using this method, but not all of the color will come out - you may still have a tint or wash of the color you dyed to.Β  I do not know of a way to temporarily dye plastic and return it to its original color.

Not likely to happen - you can't really bleach plastic. You could get some green wefts or a green wig and dye the tops black, but not the other way around.
