Description
I know there are a few others out there, but here is my tutorial for Sharpie dyeing a wig! This works best with Kanekalon and other premium synthetic wigs. Eleora and cheaper synthetic wigs may not dye evenly. Make sure to check your wig fiber content before attempting to dye!I've had a lot of practice with this method, and this is the formula that works best for me, so I hope it can help you dye your wig the custom color you are looking for!
Many thanks to my friend Envel who helped me with my first Sharpie dyeing experience. Tutorial and all images therein are Copyright Fire Lily and FireLilyCosplay.com.
EDIT: Since so many people ask this question, I'm addressing it here. "How do I dye a wig black?" Since Black Sharpies are concentrated purple, you will have to use FW Ink, India Ink, or another Artists Ink and follow the FW Ink Dyeing Method: [link]
Another method is to color/sharpie the wig by hand using a black Sharpie. This will give it a slightly purple sheen, but it will come out black.

I have used this tutorial before, happy customer right here. But would this also apply to dying a cheap funfur cat tail?'

FireLilyCosplay In reply to sanatales [2013-07-04 17:29:25 +0000 UTC]
Yes - the ink should color faux fur easily. Just make sure it is concentrated enough. If the dunk dye method is splotchy, try a spray bottle.

Would this method work if I used a silver sharpie to get a silver wig and silver clip in to the same shade?

You won't get any metallic shine to it, but it will dye the wig grey.

Not sure! Many people say you can't effectively dye Eleora brand wigs, but several friends have had great success using the FW ink method on Eleora. I have used the Sharpie method on super cheap Halloween store wigs and high quality Tokyokalon and Kanekalon wigs.

Do you know if I could use this method to dye this wig ([link] in Indigo Purple) to be a medium-dark brown color?

FireLilyCosplay In reply to Who-The-Hell-Am-I [2013-06-09 00:41:11 +0000 UTC]
I very much doubt it. The brown dye wouldn't be dark enough to turn the purple to brown. Best just to get a brown wig.

I finally found wig dye tutorial explaining clearly. thankss thankss~
Can I ask something. This method can be used to dye just half of the wig? And is this possible to dye turquoise green to black?

FireLilyCosplay In reply to Thatdar [2013-06-04 01:15:07 +0000 UTC]
Yes, and yes. Just don't dunk dye it completely - section off one half and use a hairband to keep it contained. You can also spray the dye on.

I'm curious; I have a dark brown wig (a few shades from black) that I need to be black. Would black sharpies still give it a purple-ish hue?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
FireLilyCosplay In reply to SkyeAnnabellaLeeRay [2013-06-04 01:15:47 +0000 UTC]
It may still have a purple hue, but you can try dyeing it twice - people say that in their experience dyeing it black two times gets rid of the purplish tone.

Hi, thank you for the tutorial! I'm planning to dye a similar wig into a similar blue and was wondering:
1. would it be ok to dye it outdoors and not use a tarp?
2. did you use 4 blue sharpies, as shown in your pictures?
3. would 2 bottles suffice for a short base wig and two short pigtails?
thank you so much!

1 - Yes, as long as you are ok with the grass being colored.
2 - Yes, but I should have used more. 4 is not enough to dye a logn wig, just a short one.
3 - Yes.
Welcome!

Any permanent ink marker: Copic, Prismacolor, Sharpie, artists ink, India ink, FW ink, etc. Not suitable for washable markers.

You can dip dye the tips or use a spray bottle on them.

this has been very helpful, but i have a question, can you dye a red wig brown using green sharpies?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
FireLilyCosplay In reply to shirou45 [2013-05-18 02:21:16 +0000 UTC]
It would most likely end up turning a shade of brown, so it won't turn the color you want. Better to start with a light or white colored wig.

Another choice would be to use RIT fabric dye. It works pretty well on wig hair and it works great on nylon.

How much does sharpie dyeing usually cost? I need a black, straigh wig, but I'm on a budget...
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
FireLilyCosplay In reply to LooneyLune [2013-05-14 00:37:10 +0000 UTC]
Depends on where you are in the world. Where I live, a 32oz bottle of rubbing alcohol is about $3, each sharpie is about $1-2, and tarps/gloves/plastic boxes are around $3-5 a piece. It's honestly easier to just buy a black wig rather than going through the trouble of buying one to dye it, but if you already own the wig this may be affordable to try.

FireLilyCosplay In reply to HasukiCosplay [2013-05-12 21:02:18 +0000 UTC]
The wig cannot return to its original color once stained. You can strip some of the color out with 90% rubbing alcohol, but not all the color.

Maybe a few pale yellow sharpies? I'm not sure because I mostly dye my wigs to extreme colors rather than lighter colors.

I tried dying my wig (synthetic) with sharpie, but when it was dry (after rinsing), it would rub off my hand whenever I touched it. is it because there might be excess dye or is it something else.
👍: 0 ⏩: 2
FireLilyCosplay In reply to Pudding-Yogurt [2013-05-09 02:05:14 +0000 UTC]
There may still be excess dye. Rinse it again until the water flows clear and doesn't have any hint of color. You can also lightly shampoo it if you need. If it still rubs off very easily, the wig fibers may not be able to accept the staining of the ink.

also how would I stop the color from rubbing off?
I used black sharpies.
