Description
In Hawaiian myth, the Hawaiian Hawk (Buteo solitarius) or 'io is seen as the great protector of the islands. In real life, the Hawaiian Hawk preys upon birds, mammals, and reptiles, many of which are introduced (sadly) to the islands. In this way, the bird truly is living out its mythological association. This is a light phase Hawaiian Hawk, like most species of Buteo they're fairly variable in colour.
