Description
Literally was in bed when the storm started. grabbed my pants and camera and raced out the back. This was the only shot I managed to capture, not bad for a first try at lightning photography! The storm has just passed enough for me to feel safe enough to plug in my camera to the PC, I had visions of everthing exploding just as I hit send!

Even bettter when I get my new lens! f1.8 50mm fixed focus. good for low light portriats and partys! much faster than my current f4.5 18-70mm

This is amazing. How did you do it? I got an amazing 1st lightning picture too, but "how" did you do it? Please. I want to take more, and it's really hard.

check the EXIF data on the photo, I used a ten sec exposure with a a low ISO (200 to 400 ish depending on the available light, also means less noise) and set the apperture again acording to light. I used between f4.5 and f8. it depends on what other light is around such as street lamps etc. A bit of experimentation really helps before hand.
Then set it up on you tripod (esential) and some where dry. hit the shutter and hope somthing goes flash in front of you. I got this about my 4th shot and only 1 other in the next 20 or so.... a fair amount of luck is involved.
Hope it helps.....

good luck, I think that counts for most of it. Oh I forgot to mention, and this may seem obvious, frame the shot with somthing intereting in it, you cant control the lghtining (or can you?.....Hmmm... 1 tesla coil and a small rokt trailing a thin steel wire later..... ) but you can control the rest of the shot.

Exceptional capture! I was wanting to do the same but I couldn't get a good vantage point without venturing out into the rain, and I didn't want to get my camera wet.

I as lucky to have a porch with the wind to my back. I think that a very large WOOD umbrella might be inorder to add to my equipment list.

Back porch in kingsbury (just across the road from Latrobe uni). Friend across the road was only a few hundred meters from a strike.

This is absolutely stunning, incredible lightning formations! The electric blue looks even more striking against the dark outline of the tree branches, great work!
