Such a lovely piece of art for inktober!

I love the black shadow-monster evolving from the sheets of paper and books! It is really frightening!

Moreover your composition is great. I like the rather diagonal arrangement of the books, which produces a dynamic feeling. A great dramatic situation is created by the monster leaning closely over the wizard from above. Furthermore, the dark wizard in combination with the dark monster somehow shows us a unity between both of them. Maybe the wizard accidently summoned the monster?
Overall it is a very exciting drawing!

For me there are only two things that could be improved. First, a little bit more difference between the wizard and the monster would help to distinguish them more easily. What I mean is that at first sight you see the monster, but not the wizard. Maybe cross-hatching could help. In this case the wizard is still dark (which I like very much!) but it does not look too much like the monster.

The second thing was already mentioned by another commenter, but as it is the most important point for me, I have to mention it too: the blade of the scythe looks too much like the monster. I thought it was only a wizard’s staff. After reading your description I was able to detect the blade.

Summarizing I have to say that I really like this piece!

Maybe I interpret too much, but I like the idea that instantly came to my mind: “evil can emerge from wrong/dangerous knowledge” (evil is (of course) symbolized by the monster and knowledge by the books)

Thank you so much for your compliment and critiques! I really appreciate it ^^
Ahhh it's okay, i like if people trying to interpret after seeing my works~ Every people have their own imagination, don't you think? And i think yours are cool! It can also interpret this way: There are no good or evil knowledge, it's all depends how people use it. Or so i thought hha XD
Glad you enjoying my art!

lu--24 [2015-10-11 21:24:38 +0000 UTC]

This is truly a great work!

The thing I like the most here is the composition: everything looks really dynamic and flowing, so that you follow it until your eyes reach the monster and the character under it. It works very well.
I also like a lot how the papers transform into the monster, it's really well done and the transition is very smooth. This isn't just an inktober sketch, it's a proper artwork filled with details! ^^ (says the one that has jumped over several days because she's to busy, and didn't do much the other days )
Anyway, I really like the contrast between the white and black parts here, and the cross-hatching. It all looks great.

The only problem I can see is with the scythe's blade... I had an hard time understanding it was not part of the monster but part of the scythe instead... I think it's because it's so close to the moster's fangs and of the same black... Maybe it would have been easier to recognize if it was less darkly shaded?
Overall, anyway, I really like this piece, and it has a nice concept, I wish you to be able to complete inktober with equally good pieces! ^^

I love how the shadow appear from the paper sheets, actually it remembers me of one of my Inktober drawing (Day 2 if you want to check it out ^^).

The perspective of the drawing is what I think have the most impact in this work. The paper sheets lead the eyes toward the wizard and the shadow, and I think it manages to give a good action-scene feeling.

Good job ^^

I adore Black and White art. It really shows much more to me then color. Your shading is great and lines are clean. I was wondering if i could use this concept in my Dungeons and Dragons campaign the whole demon/outsider being summoned in a library.

Very cool I like this a lot! Good luck with Inktober this year!

One suggestion, in case you try something similar in the future. I feel that you could emphasize the circular elements in your overall composition more to make the magic really flow, such as the shape of the shadows on the monster and the curves that the pages on the floor follow (i.e. tweak the perspective a bit for the floor). You've already got a circular centerpiece set up with the floating books in the magician's hands.
