--- The story

Ludi yawned, his large mouth opening wide to show off the sharp feline fangs within. Once his yawn was complete he turned his ears forward and watched Caihong as the young woman walked up to him hefting a polished, but older dressage saddle. They style was at least a century out of date and the entire thing had required re-padding and TLC before it had been serviceable but the young woman had insisted she use the saddle her father had stored away the last time he'd had to ride horses. He had abolished the idea of riding again as soon as vehicles, and carriages, had become common place enough in their respective times in each area he had been in and as a result the old saddle had been tossed away and forgotten. They had argued over using 'that old thing' and just buying a new saddle for hours before Caihong had won out. She couldn't afford the cost of a new saddle that was custom fit to the Shugo shedu cat, Summanus, and 'that old thing' had actually fit him almost perfectly. All he'd required was a slightly thicker quilt saddle blanket... and to be shaved down for the saddle to fit his fur!

They, Simone and Caihong, had spent hours the week before trimming Summanus' fur from neck to tail to the top of each leg. First with scissors all over and then again shorter and shorter until his fur was short enough to not short-circuit the clippers. That they had done in sections, rotating clippers to not wear them out but finally they had trimmed the long haired beast down enough that the saddle fit. For the rest of the week Caihong has taken the time every day to practice braiding his fur and rubbing down where he had been clipped to repair as much of the damage that clipping the hair had done. The end result was a still soft, still fluffy- if much shorter- shedu who didn't care if he looked like some deranged attempt at a Poodle.

"Well," Caihong grinned at Ludi as the cat twirled an ear. "Are you ready boy?" He turned his attention away from her and she chuckled and saddled him. Each of his legs, where he had been clipped, had been braided in a tight running braid for a border and his full mane had been tugged down out of the way into it's own running braid. The rest of his loose fur was silky soft and brushed out and his face was a-glow with the luminous halter that she had put on him earlier. Caihong cinched the saddle into place and swung up onto his back. "Let's warm up," she whispered with a pat on his shoulder, and scooped up the reins. Butterflies swirled and fluttered wildly in her stomach and her nerves jangled together. Her heart raced and she clenched the reins, sending Ludi into a protesting, jarring trot until she relaxed again. Finally they were called for their turn in the arena and she had no more time to think about how this was her first time in any sort of competition before. I didn't even get to look for Simone or Daddy. She thought as Ludi stretched out into a floating, extended gait to move to the center of the arena. I hope I don't disappoint them... She bowed her head to the judges and the music started, their cue to begin the routine....
