remember the flame war this started??? my 13 year old self was so mean

anyways since some of my theory has been disproven by canon, i think this is how luna and celestia became alicorn princesses:
starswirl and a council of ponies that ruled equestria before the princesses knew their current way of doing things wasnt working out. sacrificing many unicorns' magic to raise and lower the sun and moon every day wasn't going to last for long, and the council's decisions weren't always in equestria's best interest. there was still a large divide between earth ponies, pegasi, and unicorns. the council scouted out many individuals all across equestria and found sun petal and moonlight, two massively unrelated ponies who had intense magical potential. starswirl helped them hone their magic and they became alicorns strong enough to rule equestria and raise and lower the celestial bodies by themselves. they were crowned celestia and luna and, for simplicity's sake with the royal bloodline forming, adopted one another as sisters. when starswirl and the pillars disappeared, they felt the loss of their mentor very badly. they went through his catalogued journey and discovered the tree of harmony and the elements, securing their rule and power.

so equestria and its princesses were born!
