I had this idea when I was in a butterfly greenhouse with my friend. I thought about the incapacity of language to communicate the deepest concepts. A lot of the communication is made through non verbal. For millions of years, animals communicated through non symbolic sounds; the modulations of the voice may tell a lot more about emotions than the words used, and sometimes sharing ideas is impossible through any form of communication. But beside the incapacity of language to reach fundamental ideas, i thought about the visceral feeling of getting in touch with another being. In the painting, the woman tries to make a contact. The man indicates her that talking is not necessary, because the communication is already established by the sharing of a common experience.
