Kanan came from an equine ranch, his family were renowned for rearing equine and hooved ferals for everyday occasions, from pets to work pokemon to battle and contest partners the works. his parents and family being bipedal were quite shocked when Kanan was born as a taur though the wobbly legs and extra-large body didn't stop the young deerling from helping out the family, though he couldn't join them in riding training he instead helped the caretaking of the other ferals, and even helped new riders learn the best techniques to mount a feral without spooking it. using himself as a training horse so to speak so those careless students wouldn't get hurt on the ranch. his body also meant he could help with the more labour required tasks that his siblings couldn't help with, making him quite popular with his siblings.

course his life wasn't without difficulties, as many of the kids in the local town would often joke that one of the ranches ferals escaped its stable whenever he was out and about in town, though they often got a scolding from their parents when they were caught, and Kanan learned to ignore them, he didn't need their approval after all. the only approval he wanted was from his parents who gave it to him in spades whenever he helped out. but there was something that did make him feel isolated, and that was school, often or not he would have to miss out on classes that weren't on the first floor due to being unable to go up the stairs and narrow corridors, they resorted to just giving him a small room with a TV to watch lessons streamed into them so that he wouldn't fall behind in class, though this made him feel like he was a burden, but didn't want to tell anyone so as to not seem like he was ungrateful so kept things to himself a lot.

it wasnt until he finally graduated that he learned about the academy that was accessible to not only Taurs but nagas and Mers as well. it sounded perfect to him, and thankfully his test scores were high enough to get him accepted. although tears were shown by the family when he told them, they were happy that he was starting to branch out and take his education into his own hands.
