That theory came about due to their shiny and regular colours being the same, I think. It so happens that, in the earlier days, they just shifted colour palettes a little bit across on the spectrum to get shiny colours (hence why many Gen 1 and 2 Pokemon have slightly unimaginative shiny schemes). Mew and Ditto have the same base colour, thus the same shiny colour. Though any other connections may not have been confirmed, but they haven't been disproved either...

yeah, I think ditto was a failed clone of mew. Then mewtwo was a malfunctioned clone of mew. something like that I think.
