Description
I hope this can be helpful for those who draw (or want to draw) dholes/Asiatic Wild Dogs! These are such incredible doggos and they deserve so much more attention. It's really sad that they're among the least-studied carnivores in the world
Interesting Dhole Facts!
- Dhole clans live in burrows that have multiple entrances and exits.
- Dholes often engage in friendly social rituals to strengthen group bonds. One interesting dhole pack ritual involves individuals preparing for hunts by playing and chasing each other around as a warmup session before the hunt.
- Instead of barking or howling, dholes use clicks, whistles, mews, screams, yips, and squeaks to communicate. Among their various calls include chicken-like clucking sounds!
- According to waza.org, "The dhole is an opportunistic feeder eating berries, fruit, insects, lizards, and mammals [of various sizes, from small rodents to mature deer]"
- At times, dhole clans will combine to create a "super pack". They'll hunt together, share food, and engage in friendly activities before breaking off into their original groups.
- A group of dholes is often called both a "clan" and a "pack", though some sources state that "clan" is more accurate.
- A wikipedia article on dholes states: "'Dominant' dholes are hard to identify, as they do not engage in dominance displays as wolves do, though other clan members will show submissive behavior toward them."
- Many dhole clans include individuals who are related to dholes of neighboring groups. This is believed to contribute to the tradition of different groups occasionally mingling
- With only around 2,500 left in the wild, these canines are already extinct in about 10 Asian countries. Save the Dhole!
Wanna learn more about dholes?
- Please check out this adorable series of little comics that share cool facts about these canines!
- Read about these awesome animals on the San Diego Zoo article of them too!
- You can also learn about them at Dholes.org!
- Another option is reading about them onWikipedia
Since dholes are among the least-studied carnivores humans know of, some info on certain sites may be a bit conflicting. If you know of any other good sources for dhole info, please link them in the comments so I can add it to the list!

The top middle caricature looks like something straight out of a Korean animation, while the top third could easily be imagined being in the Russian Jungle Book animation

Awwww! X'D It really means a lot to me that I could achieve such stylistic variety for the dhole caricatures hahaha
And thank you for commenting also! It's an honor coming from the one who greatly inspired this tutorial
Also great to see you're still active! I don't think you could remember me, but on an older account I was an active member of Anti-Wolf, especially in 2011 XD

I knew about the rounded ears, but I didn't realize their faces were shorter, or their bodies were longer and more "cat-like"...though I can definitely see it now. Funny how some things have to be pointed out in order to even be noticed, heh.
I have an (anthro) dhole character, but I've never drawn her. (yet.)

Yeee! They're definitely unexpected traits for a wild canine, and things that make the dhole unique
Although I had noticed that dholes had shorter snouts, I didn't really realize they were thick and more square-shaped (like a Hyena's) until I read it mentioned in an article I found during my research. Now I definitely notice it when I see photos of dholes and I'm excited to draw Tea with more improved anatomy going forward, now that I know how I can do her species a little more justice! XD
It definitely takes someone pointing things out for others to notice, which is why it's great when people share their observations hehe
And that's really cool you have an anthro dhole character! The world needs more dholes!

Was there any misconceptions against dholes as marauders who raid the wolf territory, like in The Jungle Book? In real life they are social, kinder to their comrades, and even allies, and they are efficient hunters. Plus, like African wild dogs, who happened to be the dholes' genetic relatives, they need some lov'n!

Actually, I've never heard such a misconception, even while I was digging around for dhole info! XD
But yes! I completely agree~

Yeah probably! I meant that The Jungle Book did feature the dholes as antagonists alongside Shere Khan the tiger, Tabaqui the jackal(or hyena), and/or Buldeo the human village elder whose a hunter.

Oh! Yes I do remember that thing about the antagonist dholes XD I wonder why they were made into the bad guys, considering how sweet they are compared to wolves?

Yeeperdoodle, according to the I'm a wolf, from I'm an Animal YouTube BrownBag series, that some wolves are nice creatures, and they're not greedy(which they cannot kill and eat whenever they want), and they don't attack humans, unless they can defend their turf, and/or maybe the sick wolf can, if we stay away from sick wolves. Plus, dholes and wolves, like most canids, which they are omnivores, which they eat different things, like fruits, and grasses, to small and bigger animals(except for the elephants, which one dhole, or one wolf is no match for an elephant, in either a 1v1 way.).

If I had a dollar each time someone called the dholes in City of Trees wolves, or foxes, or coyotes, I could retire.
Loving all the dhole representation lately! Must spread the dhole love even further.

Lol I can't imagine how irritating that is XD It's not even like you give them the pointy ears and complete "wolf face" like I've seen a lot of other people do.
I'm really excited to be seeing more dhole stuff too and I must contribute any way I can!
