I feel most relaxed with critters around! these calves actually don’t belong to this cow, and she really dosent like them much, but so long as I stay near by she lets them suck! in a few weeks the calves will be old enough to not need milk anymore, and I will let her go with the other cows! But for now this is where you will find me twice a day!

In her defence most cows won’t let orphan calves suck regardless of what I try... so she actually pretty good! Several years ago I had a cow that just loved babies! And I could put orphaned calves on her really easily. Normally when she would calve I would give her three extra calves and after a few days of them getting used to each other, I could let the go out to the pasture and she would look after all four better than most cows would look after one!
Calves should be older than three months old to be off milk but they do better if they are four months old! Most don’t get taken from their mothers till they are five to six months old...

Most Momma cows are very sweet and dedicated! I’ve had the odd one who wasn’t interested in her baby at all, but that is very rare. More commonly you find momma cows who will kill for their calf! Several years ago I had a cow who looked just like the cow from the movie Old Yeller! She had a lot the same temperament too, when she calved you would just leave her calf alone because she would hurt you! Rosie was an amazing mother, and one day she showed me just how much she actually knew and trusted me!
On a very beautiful morning in the spring I was out giving sick calves medicine... it was a really bad spring better than 70 percent of our calves got sick and I only had eight hours from the time you first seen symptoms of the calf being sick, to when it would be dead, unless you caught it and treated it! So I spent all day every day in the pasture with my horse looking after calves! honestly I loved it and wish I could do it again! Anyhoo this morning I had caught and treated a few calves and was packing up my equipment to continue my rounds, when I seen Rosie coming my way pushing her calf in front of her! Well I thought she just wanted to chase me(I really didn’t know much) well I saddled up and went a short ways and caught the next calf who needed medicine and started working with it... well by the time I was done Rosie was almost to me again and I was kinda worried because why would she be doing this! I picked up my stuff and tried to leave but Natasha wouldn’t go! Well Rosie brought her calf right up beside me and then took a couple steps away and stood there watching! Then I seen the calf cough and I understood what was going on! Her calf was sick and needed help and she knew I could help! Rosie brought me her calf and let me treat it twice a day for three days and then went back to being her normal self!
Anyhoo just wanted to share! Hope you have an awesome day and week!
i always found it sad how “milk cows” are treated! Often they are kept milking for 18 months at a time and only given six month to recover! Of course there are some really good farmers who love their critters, and look after them very well! But I just couldn’t do it!

Not too much different than humans then!
And Rosie is such a wonderful name, and smart! I’ve heard of stories where critters realize that some people are just there to help, and it warms my heart that you had that experience! Haha I love stories like this too
I find it depressing as well : ( the poor babies aren’t meant to be put through such intense milking, and for so long too! Their babies are taken away as well. I adore the farmers who look after them well though! And haha flo! Don’t stress about it you already do so much haha
