Description My husband is a BIG fan of dinosaurs, and especially raptors. About 1.5 years ago I drew him one, but I got sick of looking at it (since he puts it on everything on his computer). So this was born.

I tried painting without lines this time, and for a recent attempt, I think it turned out really well.

Might post a progress breakdown for this one in the near future, just so I can keep tabs on my own process. xDΒ

Tutorial/ breakdown can be found here .

Hi there, I found your piece on .

I gotta say this picture of raptor is kind of cute and adorable and I noticed on the descriptions that you draw this for your husband which is nothing wrong with that because everyone has something that they interested into. I usually imagined velociraptor for being terrifying, brutal, and sadistic just like the one on Jurassic Park movies. If you prefer cute raptor that's fine with me.

The eyes on the raptor is kind of adorable and the eyes is kind of bit animesque which is nothing wrong with that. Yeah, I do love anime eyes because well they somewhat easy for me to draw. The nose hole on the raptor is also good which is also nothing wrong with that. I also love the streaks on the raptor's tail, back, and legs because it give the detail to it. For some reason, I noticed that the raptor's left thumb looks kind of weird. It's like the left thumb being bended or something but it's still good nonetheless.

The shadow under the raptor looks kind of bit reddish dark. I think the shadow should have been black or dark grey. But if you prefer that colors, that's fine with me. I am not forcing you to change the color of the shadow or anything.

Overall, you did a great job drawing this cute raptor even though I prefer the scary one. I realized that I already favourited this couple of weeks ago and I don't remember it. So keep up the good work and I hope your husband love this drawing though.Β

Normally, when critiquing a drawing, one only has access to the final product, much like when critiquing a movie or a beef stroganoff. However, having an open window to the entire process gives me as the reviewer the ability to view each stage and see where certain aspects went right or wrong.Β With this particular drawing, I find the process ultimately boils down to two phases: Sketching and Coloring. Since there's no inking phase due to the final product being a digital painting, everything after the initial construction is purely about adding the color. I'll go over each of these two phases, one at a time.

First, let me go over the initial sketch. We have a small dinosaur with big eyes and tiny arms. Admittedly I'm not well-versed in my reptile anatomy, but I am very impressed by your sketchwork. Just from the negative space created between the head and tail, I can see a solid grasp on the variation of straights and curves that makes for interesting character design. Seeing it repeated in between the legs tells me that it wasn't just a fluke and that you have the technique tucked snugly in your utility belt. The head is very well-defined to the point where I can make out the skull behind it from the sketch alone. I can see the slope of the forehead that flows into the nose and drops down suddenly to become the mouth and jaw, the eyesockets fit perfectly into place on the sides of the head and look evenly spaced from the center given the perspective, and the connection of the head to the body feels very natural (no doubt supported by your amazing proportions). The size of the head relative to the arms, tail, and legs is superb, and I would no doubt consider your proportions the most technically impressive aspect of this piece. Measuring this character with my own tools, it looks like it hits the Golden Ratio in just about every area. You've also got a sweet line of action thanks to the especially curvy tail, and having the tail pointed in the same direction as the eyes provides flow that pushes the viewer's eye to the top right. The direction this character is looking is immediately readable, perfect for a cartoon or comic.

It's interesting to see the process you used to select your colors. Based on what you ended up with, I'm actually not sure if you were going for realistic colors or more fantastical ones. The first thing that strikes me about the colors you chose is that you used black as a base color for the shading. This is a technique that I've struggled with and other artists have recommended me away from, since it makes the final result look rather murky and unappealing. Based on your step-by-step, it look like you were working with a predominantly Red/Green color palette, a fine choice given their contrasting natures. You also picked rather light hues, so oversaturation is definitely not an issue. What strikes me is that Steps 2 and 3 are much more aesthetically pleasing colorwise since the red works much better with the brown than the green does. And then you have all this black toward the lower parts of the dino providing such harsh contrast despite the otherwise optimistic tone.Β

For Halloween this year, I tried a new color technique in one of my pieces, using a similar lineless style like you did here. I wanted to avoid using black as my shading base in order to make more appealing colors and capture the natural light from the environment. Note how I used green for the foundation of my shading and the effect it has on both the feeling of the image and the appeal of the color scheme. I'm sure I can do better, but you can imagine how this picture would be uglier if the darkest parts were all based in grays and blacks instead of dark blues and greens.

I'd recommend giving it a try. A great color palette on top of your awesome sketches would be a powerful combination.Β

Make the most!

Thanks for the tips and ideas. I think I tried playing around with reflected lights in the darkest areas, but nothing looked awesome. I'll play around with it again in the future and see what I can come up with. Thank you very much for your detailed feedback. ^^

Hello fluoroid,
your mini raptor looks really cute. The combination of child proportions (large head), the smiley corners of his his mouth, the crocodile snout and the big shiny eyes appeal to the "hug-instinct" despite the dangerours looking sickle claws on the feet
I like the color pattern with the somewhat darker brownish shades on the back (where lighter colors might not stand out as much because the light is falling on the little guy's back anyway) and stripes of it on his knees and thighs.
As for hopefully constructive criticism (offered only with deep respect to your work, the hope of helping you to even further improve your future work and not meant as faultfinding) I notice that his legs are set right unterneath his torso which protrudes a bit over it. I think if it is meant to be anatomically correct the hip joints would have to stand out a little at the pelvis to make the legst free to move.
