The closer in composition it is to the gem functioning as the soul, the better. Even the smallest detail is important when it comes to compatibility, for example, a heliodor and an aquamarine might not be compatible, despite both being a beryl, but with different inclusions. This is more of an issue when a monster needs a replacement gem, however.

If a monster is unable to perform focused magic for any reason (lost forehead gem, damaged, or some other issue), they may request a physical weapon. Monsters without focused magic won't actively enter combat (except archers), but they still need to defend themselves. Such weapons are made of crystals, most commonly quartz and obsidian. Spears and daggers are a common choice. While the monsters do use metal tools and armor, the blade is never made of metal. This mostly has cultural reasons, but monsters have a preference for gem-based weapons. Even if they cannot focus magic through them, they still find these weapons easier to wield and more comfortable because despite the incompatibility of gems, it still is a gem.
