Although it has been some time since they were rescued, they still have obvious scarring on their face and have become extremely sensitive to touch and tacking. While they have learned to accept being haltered and led, they have not been ridden since being rescued, and will panic at the sight of a bridle or saddle coming their way.

The day was May 5th, it was still morning so the Nevada heat hasn’t fully reached its peak yet. Harper was asleep in the passenger seat, head leaning against the window. The trip from Montana to Nevada was a long one, and she’s been taking brief naps whenever she could. Her boyfriend, Bryan, was driving the truck and trailer. The road suddenly became bumpy when Bryan gently shook Harper,” Hey, love, we’re here.” Harper sat up, rubbed her eyes, and before them was the sanctuary. They passed through the front gates, and it was even prettier than in the pictures.

Pens on either side of the barn held a number of losheknas. Some were running around their pens, wondering what the disruption was. Others were curiously watching with pricked ears. Harper could see what the facility meant when they said they were running out of room, every single pen was full.

Bryan parked the truck and Harper slipped out. A tall, cheery volunteer came up to them, her dark brown hair pulled into a high pony. “Hi! You must be Harper we’re so glad you decided to go through with our program.”

“I am too! I wanted to last year, but I couldn’t, so I’m super excited to participate.” Harper responded.

“Well we’re glad you’re just as enthusiastic as we are. Here,” she handed Harper a paper folder,” this is your random horse’s information.”

Harper looked down at the folder, on the top was the ID number, 6985. She looked behind her at Bryan at the truck. “I’ll go get em and be right back!” She called.

“I’ll be waiting!” He called back.

The volunteer smiled, motioning to a pen,”follow me.  He’s  right this way.”

Harper followed behind her, looking at each horse that passed. Some looked fine, but with a wild look in their eye. Others looked old and lame, and some were almost skin and bone. The walk to her horses pen seemed like an eternity until they finally stopped at a wooden fence. Before her was a stunning amber champagne stallion, with a thick white blaze and green eyes. And to harpers amazement he had some stunning white brindle markings on his flank.

“Wow he’s gorgeous.” As he approached the fence Harper couldn’t help but noice those green eyes had a lingering sense of sadness behind them.

As he got closer Harper had to stifle a gasp. On his face were thick pink scars, mapping out where a halter would be.

“He was rescued from a trail riding company in California. He had become frustrated with the inexperienced riders, and threw one. We think they beat him after that and eventually became too frustrated with him, and left him in a pen by himself. However they never took his halter off, and as you can see that left some damage.” The volunteer shook her head.

“When he got here he still had the halter on. We had to call our vet to put him under and remove it. After that it was a lot of cleaning to make sure it didn’t get infected. We were able to retrain him to allow a halter. But he’s *extremely* sensitive to touch. And freaks out whenever a saddle or bridle comes near him. “

Harper looked at him with furrowed brows. The thought of what the damage looked like before left her sick to her stomach.

“I’ll just have to take things slow with him, show him he won’t be beaten for any mistake he makes.” Harper said.

“I’m sure he’s going to do great, I can tell you’re a patient person.” The volunteer smiled and patted her shoulder. Harper smiled back.

After some slow and gentle haltering, Harper led the stallion from his pen and towards the truck. He kept his head low, ears back. He seemed nervous.

Bryan whistled when they were close. “What a beauty, and I guess the horse is ok.” Harper laughed. “She said he was sensitive to touch, and love look.” She pulled the stallion closer to him. “See that?”

“Yikes those are some sick scars.”
“From an embedded halter, they just stuck him in a  pen and left him there.”
Bryan shook his head,” Dumbasses. Come on, let’s get him loaded up.”

Harper pulled him around as Bryan opened the trailer doors and dropped the ramp. Harper walked in backwards, watching him walk up. She wanted to see how bad his issues were, so she slowly raised her hand towards him. The stallions eyes grew wide and he jerked his head back, putting on the brakes.
“Whoa! Whoa! Ho-Ho- easy boy.” The stallion snorted in response, looking at her with wide eyes.

After that he loaded fine, and he stood quietly in the trailer. Harper and Bryan loaded themselves up in the truck and started to head out. As Harper read his file Bryan looked at her. “So what do you think of him? Is he gonna be too much?”

“No… I think all he needs is a second chance.”
