Description So this was an assignment for my Illustration class.

We had to 'make visible the invisible' for the assignment. Essentially you take whatever concept that can't normally be seen without a literal interpretation and create a piece that represents it. (example: a brain disease like schizophrenia. Instead of trying to show a person suffering from it, how would you represent the idea of schizophrenia itself)

I choose electromagnetism for the this, but really it was just an excuse to draw some dragons and cool technology stuff.

Frankly I did NOT enjoy this assignment, the concept is too vague=, and I was pressured by other classes and work to speed this up a lot faster than this piece required.

I never colored a piece like this before so it was very interesting to see the results. I mean everything is essentially glowing like the neon lights in Las Vegas, so it was really difficult to create the contrasts between objects or trying to understand where shadows could be when everything is lighting upon something else. The original piece was even brighter than this, I ultimately decided to take the finished piece and darken the entire thing about a good 50% at least.

I'm a giant sucker for fanatasy/technology meshed together (hell, both my favorite 2d and 3d rpgs of all time both do it), and the colors are quite lovely.

And I agree on the darkening, I'm sure it helps with the details popping out.

That whole theme is something I just adore. (essentially a steam punk kind of style) That kind of subject matter is something you should see more in other projects from me, and the Lock series as well.

Sounds good! I love themes like these, especially when you can use your imagination and create whatever you want without people saying "thats physically impossible"

I personally enjoy it too for similar reasons. It really feels like I'm creating something my own this way and not so much an imitation or homage to something else.

Vague, huh? I dunno, maybe when choosing a subject, but I think drawing your own take on it should flow easily from there, depending on you imagination. And I think you did well here.

Granted, the coloring does seem a little rushed given what I'm used to from you, but it WAS a class assignment, so it can't be helped.

Cool stuff all the same, bro.

Yah, I think I'll come back to this piece yet, and tighten up the details and extend the effects of the lighting further.

Thanks for the positive comment~

How did you do it? I mean what steps did you take? Scanning the sketch? Colouring on Photoshop?

I draw with .5mm Mechanical pencil on cardstock (a specific brand with a 110 lb thickness) I'll be sure to get the name for you if you want. Its really smooth and captures pencil tones really great. Plus its cheap!

I scanned it in normally @ 600 DPI, with the 'restore faded colors' option checked. (This is sometimes refer to as 'use adaptive lighting' or you adjust it manually till you see the scan normally without and blur/whiteout)

I did color it in photoshop, I used a process similar to this one . Hopefully that helps.

Don't worry about the Mechanical Pencil Brand. 2b lead? And to think I thought you inked your work. Do you use a tablet by any chance.

Thanks, I worked myself ragged on this so it's really rewarding to hear you say that. I still could have taken it farther though if it weren't for the blasted deadline. Perhaps I'll return to it yet.
