Description Time vs the city: an urban reconstruction.

Manny tnx to *aarghj for letting me discover the Holga camera which is what I needed for this.

Part of the project I'll be working on during my final year in school.

If there's interest I'll also post my writings on the "philosophy" behind it.

that is seriously amazing.. this whole series is fantastic! i totally love the figure in this shot: so very, very abstract and yet entirely well-placed and used for the effect generated. i think that this is one of the best depictions that i've ever seen of a 'city-life' subject. i love the three diagonals at the bottom of this shot: the two at the bottom left corner and the one at the bottom right corner. i love how they complement each other so well without being parallel to one another. the buildings and verticals in this shot are so dreamlike and tangibly surreal; it makes me think of cinematography. i really like the contrast between the pure white in the top center in relation to the pure black at the bottom right; very grounding. excellent work: this is definitely a favorite!

Wow thanks a lot man it's always a pleasure to read comments as interesting as this one, not only cause you describe the pic how you see it but also the feeling you get when looking at it.

It's been my pleasure to read this.

I'm sure you caught a monster on camera. I see a weird figure with a hole in it's head in the middle of the two people. It's very surreal. If you like Holga's maybe you should talk to :stOOpidgErL:, cause she's loves them.

I think this one is the best. It represents the hussle and bussle of the fast-paced city life rather well....everything becomes a blur. I like that you did this in balck and white. I think that captures the theme rather well...who's got time to notice color when you are in a hurry?

Well done.

Who's got time to notice color when you are in a hurry?

I like that line a lot, it has some truth in it and I think I'll think some more about it cause I had some other ideas on it as well and I was doubting which ones I should do in colour and which ones I shouldn't so I guess you just gave me a very usefull thing.

The blur thing was something I was going for in a way that I'm planning on making a whole lot of pics where reflection and non reflection blend in with each other and all so I'm glad that intention was rather clear to you and apparently to other viewers as well.

Tnx it's always a pleasure to read comments like yours cause they give room for interaction, reflection and they display a clear tought and vision.

this is so great. the black and white works really well, too - i've yet to experiment with that!

of all the 4 photos of the series i guess this one is my favourite.

i'm now feeling an urge to grab my holga and shoot some multiple exposure photos!

Yeah I'm pretty surprised the b&w works fine I think it even works better then colour.

Strange thing everybody seems to like this one more then the others cause I liked them more.

Do you always use a tripod cause your pics are really sharp and all while the other single shots I took had a large part of motion blur in them. Might be a silly question though.

Good luck with the shooting.

no, i never use a tripod with the holga.

the holga has only one shutter speed (around 1/200'', i think). maybe you shake the camera when you press the shutter lever as it takes a bit of getting used to it.

I adore Holgas. I knew you'd used one before I clicked on the thumbs. You got some really brilliant shots. Nice work
Did you do the prints yourself?

Tnx for the kind words, I'm glad you like the pics and the Holga : )

Normally I do my own prints but as for now and cause I'm planning to do heaps of pics, I'm gonna wait till I got a more complete look on my project and from there on I'll see which pics I'm gonna print or not. I only can do b&w pics at home though...

So right I've got them developed and printed on a 10/10 cm format, then I scanned them and used photoshop to get my levels more like I want them sonce I like'm with a nice black feel and a slightly higher contrast then I usually get from print services.

I'm also thinking 'bout using the lith print technique for the final outcome but I'll have to check how that turns out and all...

I'd love to be able to do my own prints. I don't have access to a darkroom though. There isn't one at school. I don't like taking them to regular photo shops for printing because it means I have to use the 6 x 4.5 format. And it's not Holga-ish 6 x 6 is so much more fun.

Good luck with the project - I'm sure it'll be great. I'll be watching for the final outcome

For-W-Art In reply to eclipsed-mind [2004-12-10 14:41:19 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I'm lucky that my print shop prints them on a 10 by 10 cm format so I still get the full negative.

I always wanted to do pics on a 6x6 format but I thought those camera's would cost me a fortune so I'm glad I discovered the low-budget Hasselblad .

Tnx I'll hope I make something fine with the final project.

Out of all of em that you posted I like this one best. The reflections really make it interesting to view. And the shiney lines of the glass are hot as well.

Good show old man

Tnx, I'm glad you like'm.

The whole reflection thing is part of a bigger thing what I'm planning on doing, and I like it cause of the whole interiour exteriour, opacity vs transparency conflict and all...

Other things things are empty city scenes, scarteches posters and several other things.
