Description
So here it is. The thing I have been working on on and off for the past few months. This is my entry for the 1920s Historical contest. I'm not sure if I'm totally satisfied with the composition, but I do think I've gotten better about coloring while doing this. I started with Egypt and ended with oh, Turkey and Italy I think. Yay for excessive use of textures and gradients! Also: SO MUCH REFERENCE. *^*Now, for the historical part. The idea was to depict historical event(s) of the 1920s using Hetalia characters; I couldn't decide on one thing so I did AS MANY AS POSSIBLE. XD In order, from left-right:
~Turkey: The Turkish War of Independence. [link]
~Egypt: officially becomes a free state in 1922. [link]
~Germany: the rise of Nazism and Hitler as a result of the desperate economic crisis post-WWI.
~America: The Jazz Age. Plus a gratuitous flapper girl.
~China: The Chinese Civil War begins in 1927. [link]
~Italy: Mussolini becomes Prime Minister and ushers in the reign of the National Fascist Party. [link]
~Poland, USSR, Ukraine: The Polish-Soviet War. USSR v. Poland with Ukraine split in the middle. [link]
These are just supposed to be snapshot representations of the decade in each area. I will say that I am excessively proud of Turkey and China; they probably were my favorite to do. I apologize to any saxophone players out there for any wrongs I have done your wonderful instrument.
Why is America the only one partying? >.>

Does this need a filter on it for the Nazi symbol? Lemme know if you think it does.

Filter for the Nazi symbol? Nonsense, its a bit of History. You maybe able to hide the symbol of evil, but you can never truely hide the evil behind that symbol.
Anyway I like the rest of it

Ah, this is simply lovely. I love the body-language in China and Germany's the most, the way they're so contorted and hurting (China obviously takes the cake here, but they're all just great.)
Good luck in that contest!

This is why I love living in the US. We're all like, "Check out our flapper dresses, our jazz and pfft, prohibition! ...oh crap, what do we do when the stock market collapses?" But wow... I knew Europe had been going through some heavy stuff but I hadn't made all the connections. XD

I also like Italy and Germany's one. Italy looks so resigned/passive in his one while Germany looks so desperate. It really conveys how probably a lot of German people were feeling shortly after WW1. It's just so a tragedy that things were handled so badly after that war, leading to WW2 emerging.

I think I worked on Germany and Italy the longest, fiddling with colors and composition, to try and get exactly what you described. I'm glad it seemed to work.
It's amazing, how differently fascism arose in both countries. This time period was just such a dynamic era, releasing tensions and building up old ones for the coming decades; and then the world gets thrown together again. (I apologize; I'm a prospective History major).

Nah, it's ok. I find History very interesting and love learning about all the wars that have happened because it's fascinating what went on. Especially the first and second world war.

...because China is Communist. The hammer and sickle is the classic symbol of Communism. Yah?
The top flag represents the Nationalist Government/party, or KMT of China, which eventually lost the civil war against the People's Republic of China (Communists, also the fancy name today for 'China') and had to retreat to form what is now Taiwan. (That flag is the generally recognized flag of Taiwan, I'm not sure if the PRC recognizes it or not, I don't think they do.)
Military relations with the PRC are still bad, seeing as Taiwan considers itself a separate country (as does most of the world, us included, though most not officially) but the PRC does not; Taiwan is still the Republic of China according to the PRC and thus often referred to as a province of sorts. (Most Taiwanese do not agree. Thus, the problem.) Should they declare independence--though no one seems to be quite sure what that exactly entails, since it's practically independent already--there be bombs awaiting.
There's a whole bunch of ambiguity going on here due to countries not wanting to step on China's toes. For example, while the U.S. and say, Japan acknowledge that the PRC claims Taiwan as a part of China they do not recognize this claim.
Headache, no?

Of all of them, I think I like Ludwig, Yao, and Veneziano the most -- I mean, Ludwig, showing the suffering of the German people and the rise of Hitler for the time...Yao, showing the sheer agony of ideals and yet another giant clash in the land, with even more change than before...Veneziano...I mean, the flag of the Kingdom of Italy in the back; but the way he holds himself, grave and shadowed and small, it just speaks so much...
Yeah.
