Description I was working on filling another meme when I made this (I'll have it done eventually, and you can see it in its lulzy glory), but I realized that this is actually a pretty good list of my top ten favorite Hetalia characters. If we put Sweden and Finland together to stand in for all the Nordics, that adds enough space for poor Germany, and I think I can legit get North Italy in with his brother as just 'the Italies.' Then we have the full list.

I created this in a random order, going "I love Schweitz, and I don't have enough excuses to draw him. And obviously Prussia, because he is awesome and makes me laugh. And I have to have Hungary. I need the manliness of Hungary. Ooooh Roderich, Liebchen, I haven't drawn nearly enough with you! And there can never be too much Netherlands. Crap! How have I forgotten the Nordics?! Right, Fin, front and center you amazing bad ass! You know who else is bad ass? CANADA. That's who. As is Romano, even if his bad ass-ery is, erm, more subtle. And who could forget Big Brother France, who is fun to draw. Hmmm, I only have one more slot. SWEDEN."

BTW, Mariazell = SO FUN TO GO CRAZY WITH. Muhahahahahahaha!

In love with Austria's glasses

Everything about Austria in his fancy pants-ness is fun to draw. I thought about leaving the glasses as is, but since Mariazell clearly had a mind of its own, I decided to add the beaded string of pointless old fashioned chic.

LOLOLOL memes.

Oh maaaaaaan, I would really want to draw a nice picture of Austria, too, but he looks kind of funny when I draw him T^T. I'm a bit surprised that you don't have America on there, though. I always thought he was one of your favourites, considering how many state OCs you made . But I suppose it's really hard to fit in everyone when they're all so wonderful!

I actually don't like America that much. He's kinda at the bottom of my Hetalia faves list. But that's not saying much because I ADORE all the Hetalia characters (minus Tony). I think what I don't like about him is that America just doesn't actually represent our early history that well, and he is mostly a representation of this country that doesn't include me. But then again, I haven't approved of our foreign policy since 1999...

I'm sorry that I couldn't fit Poland and Lithuania on...

Oh... I guess it's kinda the same way with me and Canada. I like him, but I get annoyed when the whole "invisible moeblob" thing is taken too far. Sure, I can understand him being mistaken for America, but it's not like Canada's a totally oblivious country. However, as an inviteably biased Canadian, I may very well be wrong.

I don't mind Tony, but he's ummm... kind of only there for the lulz? Although I live for the lulz, so that should be a good thing for me XD.

It's alright. If anyone ever asked me about my favourite Hetalia characters, I would probably now just draw a picture of the world ;D.

But their noses look kinda strange :c

Thank you. Er, that's how I always draw noses? Do you have any hints as to making the noses look less strange?

Levianee In reply to MorriganFearn [2011-09-14 16:57:35 +0000 UTC]

Sorry ^^
I can recommend you not to make too many shadows near the eyes - nose may look less rough then, I think.

Hmm. I see what you men. I'm very fond of shadows, but they do kind of run into the eye sockets . I'll try that, thanks.

Thanks a bunch. I had lots of fun trying to keep them at their correct heights. Prussia still ended up a little too tall, but we can just pretend he's standing on a step stool, right?

KitakLaw In reply to MorriganFearn [2011-09-14 00:25:33 +0000 UTC]

lol - or that he's actually drawing himself up to his full height instead of using a natural stance

MorriganFearn In reply to KitakLaw [2011-09-14 00:28:11 +0000 UTC]

Well he is supposed to be significantly under-nourished thanks to the Thirty Years' War, so even standing tall isn't really going to help that.

KitakLaw In reply to MorriganFearn [2011-09-14 00:31:18 +0000 UTC]

Ah. Well, I never knew what his official height was, so I'd always thought that even if he was shorter than Ludwig...that doesn't necessarily mean he's short-short. But chances are you looked into this more than I have.

MorriganFearn In reply to KitakLaw [2011-09-14 02:18:02 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I have! Because I wanted to be clear on Nordic heights, and was shocked to discover I was as tall as Sweden. This was wrong, and I have since ignored 'cannon' heights as anything other than a relative measure. Prussia is 5' 9'' (177 cm) while Germany is 5' 11'', and America is 5' 10'', which makes Canada 5' 10'' as well, by my reckoning (He's not had his height given to my knowledge). The thing is that Hungary is 5' 9'', too, I think, and he looks taller than her.

No, Matthew's height was never given officially, but he's supposed to be of a similar height as Alfred. Build-wise...I could see him being more wiry than muscular by comparison, though.

MorriganFearn In reply to KitakLaw [2011-09-14 12:12:50 +0000 UTC]

I think of them as having the same build, just because it would make more sense that England and Cube have trouble telling them apart if they look the same on outward levels.

Makes sense - granted, you're more faithful to the anime/manga than I am PERIOD.

MorriganFearn In reply to KitakLaw [2011-09-14 12:27:47 +0000 UTC]

Heh I'm generally a cannon thumper, but Hetalia is so ambiguous that hedcannon ends up being the primary source of information. Hey, I'll bend cannon into any shape to get real history out of them, but appearance wise, history is less important than cannon.

I still can't figure out how it's France who remembers Canada when England can't...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KitakLaw In reply to MorriganFearn [2011-09-14 12:44:04 +0000 UTC]

For me, part of it is because of the history and the ambiguity, but another reason why I invest so much in developing a distinct head-canon as opposed to following the official canon is that, well, I am VERY out-of-date in terms of the official version of things. Since I don't really follow Himaruya-san's blog (in Japanese or in English translation), I don't find out what's going on in there unless people on either fanfiction.net or deviantART bring it up first.

Why Francis remembers Matthew instead of Arthur in the anime...? Personally, I think there is a misconception on the Hetalia creators' part that France is still close to Canada - in reality, though, Canadians are far closer to Britain. Even in Quebec, the French-Canadians seem to have a stronger identity as CANADIANS than FRENCH. But in all honesty, when people try to distinguish between Canada and America, a lot of people do default to the whole, "Well, Canada's got those French guys over there" card. Um...yeah. It's neither historically nor politically accurate, but stereotypes will be stereotypes, I suppose.

The anime seems to like setting up the FACE family as Francis with Matthew and Arthur with Alfred - but that means they miss out on the drama when the characters start switching around during their history

I keep up mainly through the lj community. I don't have access to good manga either at home or at school, so I wait until I have stuff saved up from my b-day or Christmas and get the official version from Amazon.

And we love the drama... Yay history!

Ah, I see.

And yeah, the drama's fun to work with - why else would I write/draw it?
