THIS IS SO AWESOME!!! I have to say they both win though, everyone started by drawing on paper and digital was created to somewhat mimic traditional painting. Digital gets pretty cool though

Well I gotta say digital won in this case, nice work.

As for the question, I think that respect of digital will grow as computer savvy generations become art connoisseurs/dealers/teachers. In my experience, when you tell most baby-boomers that you drew something on your computer, they give you a knowing nod, and you can tell that they think you just hit a button on your mouse and the picture was created in a few seconds like when they click a thumbnail in their email. They don't understand the work that goes into quality digital art because they don't understand computers very well, much less a tablet/stylus/photoshop/painter/etc.. For the most part, these people still run the schools and perpetuate the idea that one can't be a successful digital artist without a strong traditional foundation. It's kind of like the idea that a rapper isn't a true rapper until they've done prison time and/or been shot, regardless of talent.

Yes, there are some feats that traditional tools can accomplish that digital can't, but the same can be said of spray paint versus colored pencils. These are tools. Being well-versed with one does not make one well-versed in the other.

I'm mostly a digital artist but I have to say my vote is for traditional, if the power goes out I can always still draw on paper

Both will win... thanks to Tablets one can draw traditionally while having it digital at the same time

Congratulations on the DD! Nice work! I noticed that they're battling in some sort of arena.
Both of them, in my opinion, are the same! Both are great!

Personally for me this is a fun pic. It made me LOL because it conveys serious feelings, emotions and expressions - a fight to the death sort of thing, but..but with brushes!

Kudos to a very passionate piece of artwork and great workmanship to boot.

(From the corpses in the background, looks like traditional isn't doing so well. )

I hope that isn't a soft brush or he's not going to get anywhere against that armor!
Beautiful details and I love the differences in expressions: the passion and battle cry of the knight versus the cool, emotionless digital soldier.

Personally I'm hoping for a tie.

Congrats on the DD too!

Traditional as a special feel to that you can't get out of digital, and can still be used if the power is out. Digital [in many cases] is cheaper than traditional because of all the art supplies an artist can go through, even though you need to go through computer after computer, nib after nib. While the art, time, inspiration, motivation and everything that goes into art is the same in digital as in tradition, but there is a bit of a specialty in tradition because instead of using limitless tools and color, you use what you could get your hands on and create something from it, a one of a kind art work that can never be duplicated without the aid of digital prepossessing. However, digital art is cleaner, and easier because a small mistake that ruins the entire piece can be corrected simply without ruining the work further. They both have their ups and down.

I personally doodle in traditional and make the colored, shaded art digitally.
I think they're evenly match.

Also, a problem, I lost all my art files to a virus and a corrupted CD in digital. The same instance could happen when something scratches, spills or smashes the art in traditional.

You have made a great statement there. I would love to learn digital because I can ruin a piece (in my mind) with just such a small thing. But I love the hands on of traditional.

CometGreen In reply to PHarold [2013-07-11 16:58:39 +0000 UTC]

If you want to give digital a try, I have to warn you, it's not as easy in some cases. If you're used to your face being close to the paper when drawing, your going to have to get used to looking at a separate flat surface than the one you're drawing on. It's like drawing on one sheet of paper and having come up on the one next to you. I had a bit of trouble with this at first because when I draw (traditionally) I am always breathing on my art while I'm making it, even now.
If you don't already have a program, I would suggest looking up Paint Tool SAI, It's a great art program and it is free (for windows only)
Here is some of the stuff I made using SAI: [link] , and [link]
One more thing, don't feel like you're starting all over again, quite a few things in traditional techniques can be transferred to digital. The best way to learn is to play around with it.

A lot of people have mentioned the SAI tool and I would give that a try since I work in Windows anyway. Thank you again!

Traditional would probably do a bunch of fancy ninja moves and kickflips. While Digital would just stand proudly flaunting about his many years of experience and honor. So no one wins.
