Description
I finally made myself a deviantID. At first it was just the moon with the stars and stuff, but then I decided it needed more. So I made that weird shadow thing, creeping across the moon.Like it?

I made it in illustrator.
I made the moon by making two circles, and cutting the little one out of the big one. Then I made all those craters by combining more circles, and made a mask in the shape of the moon so that they could go over the edge, but only show up in the moon. Then I made a dark blue rectangle, and used the mesh tool to make those streaks of purple gradient. Next I made those stars by making a square, using the pucker filter on it, then creating a copy of it. I made the copy of it bigger, and applied a gradient to it, so it would look like a glow, then i made it's opacity much lower. I defined this pairing of star and glow as a symbol, and put a bunch of them all over the background, at different rotations. Finally, for the shadow, I made a rectangle of black across the whole thing, then a really big circle, and cut the circle out of the rectangle and then made it black, and put it at 50% opacity. Then I used the twirl tool to make it those crazy twirl shapes. Next, I made another mask in the shape of the moon, and put the shadow into it, so it only showed up on the moon. I think that's it.

Well, it's Adobe Illustrator CS3. It's pretty expensive, but if you can get it somehow I highly recommend it. It's a very powerful tool. It's different from Photoshop, because it uses vector images, and Photoshop uses raster images. Personally, I prefer vectors, because you can resize them and rotate them and stuff, without them getting all pixelated like rasters do. Although there are a lot of similarities between them (they're both made by Adobe) Illustrator and Photoshop are essentially meant for different things. Illustrator is more for drawing new images digitally, while Photoshop is meant for altering existing images, digitally, although I've really used both of them for both of those functions. So, which one you use really depends on what you want to do.
It didn't really take that long, and there was even a little bit of trying to figure out how to do stuff, and experimenting with different settings that I left out. I dunno, it's just a long explanation.
