Description ...on a cold, snowy winter's night.

EDIT x2:  Holy cats - I got a DD?!? LOL  THANK YOU!!!!  I just now saw this!!!  I will make sure to get back to everyone ASAP!!

EDIT:  Wow I had no idea I would receive such a wonderful response to this!  Thank you, all!
Here are a few things about the room:  I used sarees from India to drap and create the tent ceiling.  You can find vintage/used sarees like this on eBay for excellent prices, and since each one is about 5 or 6 yards of fabric, each one covers a LOT of space!

I am a thrift store junky, and always have my eye out for a good deal.  Probably 90% of what you see in this photo was found at thrift stores, or bought on super clearance.  Some things I repurpose, paint over, make into things they weren't originally meant to be.  That's what gives it the eclectic look.  I then mix in my personal artwork (the pillow on the chair is my art), and some precious things I've purchased over the years or bought when I was traveling.

The scale of the room is a bit deceiving.  Everything except to chest-of-drawers is meant to be reachable when sitting on the floor.  The little table is only about 10 inches high.  My desk is made out of long planks of hardwood sitting on top of planters that I filled with books that I wanted to store, and it too can be sat at with just a cushion.  The chair I found has very tiny legs so that works perfectly for when I am working for long periods of time.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask!  Thanks for all your lovely comments!

Heehee, yes I can tell from your replies to the sari questions that we are kindred spirits indeed!

Once I clean up my computer space (cleaning up after family and holiday mess!), I shall have to update my 'geek space' that you can see here, from a few years ago... quite different in layout and technology (this is 2010), though the wall and ceiling decor is pretty much unmoved   and now its all over the apartment, fading to fiery orange/reds where the sun comes inside in the afternoons

Sorry it took me so long to get back to this!  I LOVE IT!!!!  Doesn't it just make the creative space sing?  Nothing like watching those colors shift as the day progresses!

I've got a practical question: how do you clean the sarees? Don't they collect loads of dust?

Foxfires In reply to Vessark [2015-01-05 06:52:28 +0000 UTC]

Hi hi!  TreeClimber answered the question very well - and I've found they don't get as dusty as you might think!  Mine have been up now for a few months, and I've yet found the need to take them down and shake them out.  But even with the little bit of extra cleaning now and then that it takes, it is well worth is.

Vessark In reply to Foxfires [2015-01-05 12:02:02 +0000 UTC]

judging from the result, it is hell-a worth! *-*

TreeClimber In reply to Vessark [2015-01-04 18:25:04 +0000 UTC]

They do, but we just take them down now and then, shake them off, and call it good.
If they're hung on the wall, you can vacuum them quite easily, by holding one end with one hand against the wall, and pulling the vacuum with the other...not that hard, really...just takes patience and an understanding of how gravity works.

But it looks so amazing (:

Foxfires In reply to Monoe-Mistwalker [2015-01-05 07:00:32 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!!  Actually I've found that with the saris being on the ceiling and walls, and especially since this is a 2nd story room - they get very little dust!  But are very easily cleaned once they do collect some.

TreeClimber In reply to Monoe-Mistwalker [2015-01-04 18:26:23 +0000 UTC]

It can, but no more than photo frames and other objects on walls...
The only difference is we can take them down and wash them if required (not often), and vacuum now and then

Thank you!!!  Ohhh it gets cluttery for sure, especially when I am doing a photo shoot or working on a project.  But it is awfully nice once I clean it up!!

If I ever have kids, I'm going to set up this kind of thing to their room. Maybe that would make bed time stories even more magical, and keep the monsters at bay.
How did you attach the fabrics?

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

Foxfires In reply to Uuppisi [2015-01-05 06:40:53 +0000 UTC]

Heyla!!   It definitely creates a magical environment!  I don't have kids, so I was just able to use decorative thumb tacks everywhere (we own the house, so no objections from the landlords. )  But I do agree with the previous suggestion of using something a bit more sturdy to hook them to the walls if you have kids - unless of course they can't reach the ceiling!  You could tent the ceiling easily enough.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Uuppisi In reply to Foxfires [2015-01-05 14:53:19 +0000 UTC]

If you do just the ceiling, then there's also room to hang stuff on the walls, hmmh...
Well, not getting offspring any day soon so I will have plenty of time to think about this. Then I just end up doing this to my own bedroom.

Foxfires In reply to Uuppisi [2015-01-05 16:18:45 +0000 UTC]

Heheh, that is the fun...so many possibilities!

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

TreeClimber In reply to Uuppisi [2015-01-04 18:28:13 +0000 UTC]

Good luck on getting your kids not to rip them off the walls...
I've got them all hung up by tacks, simply because I don't own the property...if you DO, you can insert clasp rings and drill hooks into the walls...which if you've got kids, will cause the fabric to tear, rather than pulling the pins out of the ceiling/wall

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Uuppisi In reply to TreeClimber [2015-01-05 14:50:37 +0000 UTC]

I'm trusting that if I get kids they'll be more of the angel than monster type. It's good to live in hope.
I'm a bit clumsy so most likely I'd rip the fabric myself first while hanging the fabrics.

Everyone should have a little mascot for their computer area! Mine is a little rubber mouse named Saffron. Yes, computer mouse, I did that on purpose.
