Description She was a huntress. She was swift as the winds, manoeuvring the sand and the rocks in the canyon with unparalleled agility. Almost effortless was her pursuit, a dance of predator and prey. So lightly she could run, so easily she could jump, that she wondered if one day, she could become one with the skies.

A feathered velociraptor for you all! I wanted to try out a challenging perspective with interesting lighting (here the reflection of the orange-red rocks), and boy, it was challenging! Critique welcome!

You're right about the legs, those were definitely the hardest part. Next time I'm trying strong perspectives I think I'll try to find (or make) a (rough) 3D model to see how the foreshortening works, since I'm not skilled enough yet to construct that from scratch.
Nice catch on the feathers, too! I learned a bit about transmitted light and subsurface scattering in the meantime, and it could probably have helped liven this up!
(And thank you, too. ;D)

I think you executed this perspective really well! The backlighting is beautiful here and the halo/flare on the sun is a nice detail

Thank you! It was a really hard perspective. Especially the legs were so hard to get to look right. (in fact, I'm still not sure if I got them in the right perspective)

Looks to have been a great challenge too. To me, worm eye perspective is probably harder than bird's eye. Though I think it's looking pretty good here, and the shine adds some highlight to the already dramatic angle. Though maybe the head could be seen a bit more down, meaning that more chin and cheek were visible... Dunno, it just feels a little flat with the position of head and the foremost leg in comparison, but this perspective is hard, I should try something like this too, seems interesting.

Didn't even notice the sand/dust the first time I saw this. ^^

Yeah, as humans we look down on things more often than we look up to things, especially when considering animals.
I think you make a good point with the head though. That was the hardest part, too.
The dust is subtle, yeah. It's actually a freckle brush.

Oh, actually I've never thought about it that way, but it could be. Especially animals, because I do find myself often gazing upwards at buildings, trees, stars... :'D

Indeed, I often employ the perspective tool in digital art (you know, where you get to stretch the lines inside the square), sometimes it feels like cheating, as what has started as a poor sketch of the idea has turned quite good, even though had I drawn by hand I wouldn't have got it right at all. XD But works mostly for lineart only.

That looks great! love the orange glow from below. Though it does make me think she is running across lava XD

"The floor is lava!"
It's red desert rock, but then again in the baking sun I suppose that's pretty hot too. Not quite lava level, but wouldn't stand still there for too long.

You've done well with this piece. My favorite part is the foot honestly. You have a nice texture built in and the form is well built. I'm not sure exactly what the creatures feet would look like it it were real, but you have definitely made it believable. Good subtle lighting underneath.

I like it, the lighting especially looks great! The title is off though, there were birds before Velociraptor

Whaat, seriously?
Wait... was that those with jagged beaks and wing claws?

MaggiefromSpace In reply to Foxofwonders [2019-02-09 10:28:18 +0000 UTC]

Confuciusornis is a shining example! It did have wing claws but there's even modern birds that have them so Velociraptor lived fairly late in the Cretaceous c:

Whoa, awesome! Guess I learned something today!
Now the dilemma... do I change the title? And if so, what to?

Foxofwonders In reply to Greybeard-CG [2019-01-25 09:31:35 +0000 UTC]
