The world is a strange place. Stranger than most people realize at first. My name is Margaret. I am... for the lack of other word special. I used to be “normal” but those days are long gone.

I used to hang with friends, go to school and do what people deem normal, but a few years ago everything changed. As I am now I do not leave my apartment much neither do I see my old friends. Why you probably wonder? Well, I am no longer human.

Let start by when it happened, the day everything crumble. At the time, I was a normal college student. A young upstanding member of society trying to acquire a degree in science out of everything. I will not lie it was hard, harder than I expected, physique and chemistry were not my forte, but I enjoyed biology more than anything. I always was the curious type, always wondering the how and why of the world. I wanted to amass knowledge and be smart, if I only knew what my curiosity would drag my way.

One day, my class was visiting a simple research institute, nothing that particular. To give you an idea it was a sort of zoo, but for animal in danger of extinction. There scientist were trying to find a way to help the population of the animals to regrow, or something like that, I'll be honest I was not the most attentive when the teacher were talking about the sortie. Thankfully, a friend of mine was in my class his name was Jeff and we were friends since elementary school. He was quite the paranoid nerd, but after 12 years you get use to his quirk.

Like I was saying, my class arrived to the center and soon we were being shown around, apparently our teacher had connections to the place and manage to get us a guided visit. I'll be honest it was quite boring though. All they show us was slugs, fishes and bugs. In my head I expected more, way more than this, in retrospective it was probably childish of me, but at the time my boredom took the better out of me and I soon as the cost was cleared I dragged my friend away.

“He-hey what are you doing?” He asked me confused by my sudden action

“We are going to go see something more interesting than sea slimes” I answered at the time not aware this decision was going to cost me quite a lot.

Somehow, we manage to leave the group without being seen and we entered another corridor leading deeper into the facility. Jeff was flipping out repeating we will be in so much troubles if we got found and I kept coming with excuses to tell them in case it happen ranging from searching for the bathroom to being separated because of my (fake) narcoleptic crisis. Luckily or not, no one actually notice us as we ventured deeper into the facility.

“We should not be here” proclaimed my friend at the time on edge

“Aw come on it is better than with the guide” I said looking at the exhibit mostly empty “Or not I guess”

We wandered for a while until Jeff finally decided to coward up.

“Let go back to the group they probably notice we left now” he said

“Fine, lets” I finally gave in until I notice something in a room.

I approached the window and looked down what seemed to be a completely normal room and inside of it a girl was sitting on the bed, hugging her knees. Her face buried under her arms. It was shocking as this girl was closed up just like the animals in. I was shocked, disgusted and angry at this image. This facility there was something wrong with it I could have felt it but to imprison humans for research this was wrong.

I didn't thought, I just did it, on the moment I only wanted to free her... but I was so wrong. The moment I smashed the emergency opening button (that was a big red button behind a glass cover) making an alarm ring as the door open I burst in and as I was going to tell her to follow us, I realize how wrong I was.

Red glowing eyes pouncing at me, I couldn't do anything about it, maybe I was paralyzed by fear, maybe I just realized my mistake, but at that exact moment I realize that this girl was not a human. The girl latched on to me and started bitting me as the pain from the bites finally snapped me out of my lethargy. I tried to push her off but her grip was true and so was her motivation to attack me. Soon Jeff came to my help and try to push off the girl and after what seemed to be an eternity we repelled her back into the room as Jeff slammed the door shut by punching the button with all his might.

Still shocked by what just happened I was slowly getting up on my feet as Jeff grab my hand and lead me away, but as I was running I turned to look back at the girl and she was there at the window her hands were resting on it and she was looking at me with the most pitiful eyes I ever seen. I saw her lips move, but at the time I didn't knew what she was saying... thinking back now I know exactly what she was saying...

She was apologizing...
