Day 2I woke up with the eyes irritated by all the tears I cried the night before, I sat up and scratch my head only to notice Lillie had already left but she had let a note on my bed table. It said “See you for the breakfast” and in the back she had drawn map telling me how to get there... well that what I supposed it was... let just said Lillie drawing skills was not top notch. I get up and go directly in my personal bathroom, I was surprised this room look more like some pricey university dorm than a military base one. I wash my face and look at myself in the mirror, a girl stare back at me... this girl, the real me... Even if I already see all the proof I needed I couldn't believe I was not Frank... his memory, his life... it was all inside my mind...
After a while I realize that I was staring at my own reflection for almost five minutes, so I hurry up and change my clothes... I was not ready for skirt yet... it was just too much, so I pick up some jeans and t-shirt that were in my dresser. I walk out of the room and after I made 2 steps out, I bump into a pink haired girl and fall down. When I look up I could somehow recognize this girl, she was... Camelia. She had long pink hair, sharp pink eyes and an inexpressive face, she was slightly taller than me, her blank expression really make me wonder what she was thinking right now. Than Camelia crouch and show me her hand.
“Need help to get up, Violet...?” She said with a neutral tone
“Hum... thanks Camelia” I said, taking her hand
She helps me to get back up and we start to walk together to what was supposed to be the cafeteria. Camelia didn't seem wanting to talk, making the situation a little awkward until I decide to break the silence.
“Sorry to have bump into you... I wasn't really looking where I was going” I apologized to her
“Oh it alright... next time I'll make sure to be at least five steps away from your door... I should have known that Lillie roommate was just like her when it comes to open doors...” she said with the expressionless tone that I guess it was her normal way to speak.
“What do you mean?” I asked curiously.
“Lillie already slam her door open in my face four time... two of those time were in the same day...” she said
“Oh... sorry to hear that” I said feeling a bit bad to had ask this question
“It was nothing really... she didn't do it on purpose, but you should have been there when she slam the door open in the face of Rose... that was something” she said, but this time I could notice some cheerfulness in her voice and a little smile... so she do had feelings after all...
“Wait you mean Lillie often does this? I mean open door in the face of everyone?” I asked
“Yeah, she is kind impulsive and when it come to slam doors open she really is something...” she answer
“I see, wait you said Rose before, right? You mean she is here too?” I asked her
“Yes she is... are you alright to see her... I mean... we hear about how Frank fell in coma in Rose hands...” she said, but I couldn't tell if she was concerned or just curious
“You do?”
“Yeah... Rose didn't stop talking about it a week before we learn you would woke up, but you will see when you will face her again...” answered Camelia
Not so long after this last sentence we arrive in the cafeteria, there 3 other girls waiting for us, I immediately recognize Lillie, she was arguing with another girl with red hairs... strangely I knew it was Tulip, I'm not sure about what those two were arguing about, but I think I heard the word “swords” and “explosives”. The third girl was naturally Rose she was waiting for me... well that what it look like because when she see me, she immediately get up and walk to me. At first I instinctively back up, but I get back my countenance and face her.
“Violet, I wanted to tell you something” she said staring at me in the eyes
“Wha... what is it?” I said, my voice was trembling, but I couldn't help it... after all she was the one who killed me... well Frank
“Violet... I'm terribly sorry” she said
“Wait, what? You are sorry?” I said a bit surprised by her last statement
“Yeah, you know... for everything, I didn't knew it would have... kill him. It was not in my intention to hurt him... I just wanted to meet you, they told me it was not dangerous” she said, I notice that she started crying “I'm sorry... I'm terribly sorry”
It at this moment I realize that I was not the only one who was haunted by her past... Rose... now that I had seen her like that, I realize she was only a peon in the last events... she never asked for this either...
“So... can we... start this over again? I mean... our relationship...” asked Rose
I extend my arm toward her and say: “My name is Violet you are probably Rose” with a smile
She looked at me and I see her eyes turn blurry with tears, she hug me and say: “Oh thank you, thank you!”
“It alright, no hard feeling...” I said not sure what to do
“Lovely scene...” said Camelia, staring at us
“Will you two finish this over girly I'm sorry stuff already?” asked Lillie
“Hey, don't interrupt them, they are cute” said Tulip
“That a little disturbing to hear you say that” said Lillie
We all laugh, it was quite strange and for a little moment we all forgot that we were in a military base, for just this time we were normal girls taking breakfast together. Everyone seem so carefree and joyful, this ambiance was surprisingly comfortable, in this giant military base... talking about base.
“Hey, eating inside is a bit depressive, couldn't we go eat outside or walk around?” I asked innocently
“Hum...” said Tulip hesitantly “that might be... just a little bit difficult”
“Yeah...” answer Rose on the same tone
When they say that my imagination runs wild... I don't think I mention it before, but I have a quite... rich one. I start to panic and blurt out all my scenario, when I think back it was probably a good show for the four girls.
“What? Wai-wait?! Are we in space?! The world had exploded and we can't get out of here without big suit? The sun blows up?! Is it actually a jail and Max lie to us?!” I said in one breath
“Ah hum, no... not really” said Rose laughing nervously “We are underground”
An awkward silence follows this statement, until Lillie broke it
“Yeah, the base is in the ground” she added
“Un-underground you say?” I finally said a little on shock “You mean under the ground”
“Isn't it obvious...?” asked Camelia with her normal emotionless tone, even if I could guess a hint of teasing
After that, they all calm me down and explain the thing clearly.
“So two elevators are linked to a smaller base on the ground?” I asked trying to summarize the informations they all give me in the last minutes
“Yeah exactly, we are not locked from the world, but you need permission from Major Max to use it, but with you on our side I'm sure he will say yes after all you are his favourite” said Rose
“Wait?” I say feeling my cheek warm up a little “I-I am?”
“Aww... she is blushing, cute” said Tulip joining the 'let tease Violet' club that I guess Camelia was the president
“That because it embarrassing!” I defend myself “It not my fault, I didn't ask for all of this!”
Before I even notice I had said it... a really cold silence falls in the room, which was not so long ago so warm. Sure I didn't ask for this... no one of us asks for this. Those girls in front of me they are all the same that I am... with the memories of a dead, the feeling to be this person... the feeling to be sure of being human and suddenly realize we are... not human at all. How stupid of me, I'm not the only one in this!!!
“I am... sorry” I said breaking the dark silence
“It alright really” answered Rose
“We are all in the same boat” answered Lillie, with a serious tone, thing that was rare for her
“... We should have wait before teasing you like this... you probably still getting use to the reality...” added Camelia
“I-it alright” I answered “No need to go easy on me, we just have to stay together”
On this hope filled line of thinking we start to eat, I was surprised and a little embarrassed to know that they all wait for me to eat and also a bit flattered. The breakfast was really lively, we talk about stuff around the bases, the lack of video games, the fact that Camelia was far better in games than anyone, all games. To prove it to me they do a flip the coin contest... Camelia was right for 68 try in a row it was for the least to be say impressive, she explain to me it was a part of her skills. She explain to me that being the sniper of the team she can evaluate the speed, rotation angle and guess on which side the coin will fall on. I was really impressed, I know that we weren't humans, but for her to make this complicate calculation in several seconds. Did we have computer for brains? Just thinking about it makes me feel weird... less human, so I push those thoughts away.
I finally finish my breakfast and notice the others were looking at me, somehow I just feel like those four were putting pressure on my shoulders. I difficultly swallow my last bite, not sure how to feel around this sudden attention.
“Wha-what is it?” I asked them, my voice cracked a bit under the pressure.
The second they hear my question, I could swear that their face darken and they all smirk... I could swear their eyes were shining of malice.
“Don' you forget? You said you will help us getting out” said Rose
“You really should... but not with those clothes” added Lillie
“Cute clothes generally make negotiation easier...” added Camelia and I swear I think I see her smile, but it was far from a reassuring one!!!
“Let help her to help us” finished Tulip before the four jumps on me
I had no chance, no chance at all. Before I knew it the four of them grab my feet and arms and were lifting me up like a trophy over their heads.
“Put me down!!!” I yelled “I say put me down!!! hey-hey!! Where are we going?!”
“Dress you up good, so you look cute when you ask for our permission” answered Rose, laughing
“What?!! No I will not wear a dress!!!” I yelled when noticing a guard passing by “He-hey!!! Help me!!!”
The guard looked at us before smiling and simply said before walking away: “The Major like side ponytail”
“Thanks Mike” answered Rose
“You even have the guards in your side not fair!!!” I yelled out of distress
After what look like eternity of dressing, undressing, redressing, make-up, make-up removing, brushing, hair doing, hair pulling, I finally get some space.
“Ah, perfect” said Rose smiling proudly
“Not too shabby... it might work...” added Camelia
“Alright now time to see yourself” said Tulip before pushing me in front of a mirror
I was a bit surprised, my reflection was the same that I stare for over five minutes this morning, but different... how to explain… more lively. The girl starring back at me looked almost cute... well if I base myself on Frank taste I probably inherit. The four others just looked at me trying to hide their giggles on my probably surprised expression. I shook my head getting back into reality.
“But what is the point to dress me up so nicely?!” I said, turning to them making the frilly part of my skirt lift a bit in air.
“So you do think it nice...” immediately cut me Camelia
“Ok, let stop teasing her, we tell you before no?” stared Lillie “We want to go outside but so far Max always denied all our request, but he seem to have a particular bond with you, I don't imply anything but Frank and him were friends and you were his A.I.”
“So basically get to his office, make cute puppy eyes begging to go out and that all” said Rose gently guiding me outside of the room “After all no one of us get fresh air for all the time we get here, Tulip was the first to wake up and it been almost a year she is stuck here and I bet you are also curious to see the outside, no?”
“Hum...” I started, hesitantly “Yeah sure I do but I don't know if-”
“Good luck” cut me Rose before pushing me in a room almost making me trip
I manage to get my balance back barely avoiding to trip face first on the floor, but couldn't stop myself, so naturally the wooden desk that was in the room gladly stop me with a hit in my stomach that cut my breathing short for some seconds. I walk backward under the shock, but lose foot because of my shoes heels and finish up on my butt. Once the shock pass, I look up only to notice that Max was sited at the desk with an amused look on his face. I rapidly get up ignoring my painful rear and retake my countenance trying to look good despite the atrocious fails I just did. Max was there with a little smile probably trying to not laugh at my pathetic attempt to look serious. I look into his amused eyes and ask him:
“Can the girls and I get out in the city?”
“No” he reply calmly but quite fast
“Eeeh?! No? But why?” I asked back
“Violet” he said before getting up and looking at a picture “You are smart so you should understand. Right now you five are the most valuable people in this base. And I don't only talk about military prowess, I mean that you are most likely going to be attacked the second you put the foot out. All other association already tried to set foot into this base, but so far none of them could. If you were to openly walk outside and something, anything happen this could have enormous repercussions not only for you, but for the world outside… people are not aware the singularity happened and we do not plan to reveal your existence at least not until the team is complete"
"And there is nothing I could do to change your mind is there?" I asked knowing full well the answer
"No there is none" He replied clearly closed to negotiation on the subject. "If we were to get attacked while the last two girls are not awake things might get complicated."
"I understand" I said looking down to my feet disappointed that the energy and time of the girls were wasted on this failed attempt.
The silent seem to last forever afterward until max let out a deep sigh and asked me.
"So why did they set you up for this?" he asked looking directly at me.
"Well they are seem eager to just be outside… maybe fresh air I am not sure" I simply replied, not sure if the answer could be that simple.
"Hm…" he said while stroking his rough beard "I'll see what I can do, you may leave now"
A nod my head and walk outside of his office where there was several girls waiting eagerly for me to speak. I took a deep breath and told them he refused as most of their smile melt off their faces, but they didn't seem angry or disappointed in me.
"Oh well it had worth a shot" simply said Lillie
"I knew she needed more frills…" commented Camelia to Rose
"More and she would like those creepy dolls" replied the Black haired girl
"My hope are dashed once again, I was sure it would work this time" lament Tulip as her shoulder slump down
"I'm sorry I could not make him change his mind" I said feeling partially responsible for those reactions.
"Don't be the old geezer is a really obstinate guy, but he probably have his reasons" said Lillie trying to cheer me up, but as she said that Max voices pass through the office door.
"The old geezer have cameras and ears, so you know" he simply said from his office.
Immediately, all girls (myself included) froze and look to the door that open on Max looking quite irritated.
"Tactical retreat!" simply yelled Tulip before running off.
It didn't take too long for all of us to run off, mostly laughing.
Despite everything, being stuck here… I was kind of glad to be with this group of people. At least, it will not be too boring.
