White Knight has lost it's meaning, now overused by cyberbullies too much anytime someone stands up for themselves or their friends for the right reasons, calling out against someone's sick behavior.

The definition of a "white knight" is a person or thing that comes to someone's aid.
So essentially, defending someone does equal being a white knight. It just all depends on what that person stands for, and the influence that person has on their peers.

It's not that difficult to understand.
The term "white knight" refers to someone coming to someone's aid. It most likely comes from the original association of a knight in white armor being depicted as heavenly, divine, and caring. The term originally had no negative connotation.
But then the internet twisted it's meaning into something seen as negative. Sometimes the negative implications of the word are accurate, describing a hoard of fans that are defending someone without a second thought or people who go out of there way to "help" people only by making situations worse.
