Description In this picture, I've chosen to draw my fursona curled up for a nap on a stormy day.  Resting on the soft cushioned window seat, my fursona listens to the pitter-pat of raindrops upon the glass panes while slowly drifting off to sleep.  Though it would be more natural to feature a cave, den, or thick forest canopy to guard against some of the summer showers, I've instead opted for an indoor setting.  I'm usually fond of being caught by the rain outdoors... and in fact another animated work of mine called "Fursona Simulator 2014" shows my fursona out and about in the elements.  With respect to the importance of attention to detail, I've sketched some vibrissiae (whiskers) and used a curled up pose which hides the identification collar for my fursona.

The setting visible through the window uses KFCemployee 's downloadable tree brushes.  As my fursona inhabits a forested montane region, the rainstorm shown is one of the summer season. The scene pictured above has been in my imagination for a pretty long time, but only today have I finally finished the digital creation.  The outline of the top part of the window frame is an iconic design theme whose name escapes my recall at present.  Through yesterday and today combined, I've created this 12 frame looping GIF in a mere 5 hours or so.  An animated GIF of rainfall against a window as captured in digital camera stills was a very helpful reference, though the rain in this composition was all created with pixel box selection and freehand strokes, with no tracing whatsoever.  I designed the window seat, window frame, and cabinets with techniques designed to take advantage of the blocky pixel new aesthetic.

For my long-term goal of producing a book trailer, I'm taking small steps to begin with as I practice my animation and composition skills.  I've noticed the painting-style animated GIF created in Photoshop as being a medium which some tumblr artists experiment with.  As most of the image remains constant, some repeating element cycles through an animation.  Examples include clothes set out to dry waving about in a breeze, a store sign on a pole swaying back and forth, a tablet screen flipping through pages, or the view outside a train car window rushing by as the cabin interior remains fixed in place.  It's sort of a... medium that one has to see to fully appreciate.  If a picture is worth a thousand words, then surely the animated GIF compositions that I've described here (and my own seen above) are worth even more words.  The 12 frame animated GIF painting above was created on a 186x350 canvas and scaled up to 372x700 using nearest neighbor algorithm to introduce the pixelated effect which is a common aesthetic in these new media creations.

Comments and critique are greatly appreciated.

Not a problem. Something about being in the warmth compared to the soaking cold is always pleasant.

I absolutely love this! My only critique would be to have the fox's chest/back rising and falling as if it was breathing while in deep sleep, but after reading your description, it sounds like that might have clashed with the aesthetic you were going for in this particular GIF.

That is an aspect which I perhaps could have animated as well.  I appreciate that you offered an idea that could potentially improve this GIF.  Thanks, I'm glad you (and a lot of others) love this work.  It was well received enough to set a new record for me.

just the perfect setting for a rainy day... nothing better than staying in bed in a stormy day with the drip-drops on the window... and a cold breeze
I love the animation of the rain, and the background is so neat!

Omg it's so cute! Did you make the background? If so, TEACH ME YOUR WAYS

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

foxstory In reply to CurryDoodles [2015-04-26 15:48:02 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!  Yes, I created the background and actually the entire thing.  As for teaching you my ways... perhaps we could trade notes if you would ask some questions of me.  To start with, I made 12 layers corresponding to 12 frames in photoshop.  I cycled through the layers/frames and would make a small change from each frame to the next.  I would loop through the frames to make the rain drops slowly move in their paths.  Also, I would copy the right half of the background and flip it over so that the left half would be a mirror image, thus making the backdrop totally symmetrical.  I started with a relatively low-res canvas (350 x 186) and at the end scaled it up to 700 x 372 so that the pixel block look was created.  If you have any other questions, perhaps you could send me a note.  I might be able to help you in a more specific way.
